Calculating Areas using definite integrals

Using integrals, how do you calculate the area? When there’s a slope under a slope, the area is the difference between these two areas. What about when the area is under the x-axis (with respect to x) ? My classnotes are good, but I don’t get any of the book exercises. Thank you

I stink at math :(

I’d try asking your teacher :)
