Answer #2

Please don’t get a dog from a pet shop. The way those animals are created in puppymills is terrifying. Go to a shelter. thats where I got my dog. Dogs from breaders or petshops ofter carry desises that develp after you purchase them.

I live in the south and there is an expression that covers this…

‘more money than brains’

Answer #4

please, please DO NOT BUY A DOG. Adopt a dog and give it a good home. SAVE a life… do not encourage breeders. There are too many unwanted pets in this country as it is.

Answer #5

Heythere has a point…there are a huge number of Black Labs in the shelters, one…because they are the most popular dog in the USA…and therefore, lots of them around…and because…many are black. And when a dog ends up in the shelter, it’s black ones who are left behind.

Answer #11

I can understand if you want to buy a purebred pup…If you do, then get a list of breeders close to you, so you can see the parents…make sure that they are OFA’d (to help insure against hip and elbow displaysia)…It’ll also give you a “feel” for their temperments, if you can see the parents (BOTH parents)…

You want a breeder is registared with the Labrador Asso. of America, also…

Answer #12

Oh, also… Know that there is a major difference in temperment between a show dog line and a hunting dog line. The show line will be a little more mellow, whereas the hunting line will be very active (verging on hyper). You will definately want to make sure that both the parents were OFA certified by a licensed vet (they will have a certificate if so). And you will also want to make sure that the pupy’s hips and knees were checked as well.

Answer #13

go to pets4you.com There are a lot of very good, reputable breeders on there. Don’t listen to them, I totally feel for the dogs in the shelters, but why are they there? Ther must be a reason, right? Plus it is a lot more fun to start off with a puppy, you will also gain a lot stronger bond too. Good luck!
