Do you still buy DVD's??

With the rise of Netflix, Hulu. Apple TV, Amazon Streaming and on-demand cable services, it makes little sense to buy DVDs.

But many people still do.

If you do so, why do you still buy them when an entire month of Netflix is half the cost of a single DVD, or you could rend 3 premium movies for the price of a DVD?

If you still do, please say why. If you don’t what do you do as a replacement?

I still buy the odd DVD or Blu-Ray - simple reasons, I don’t watch much TV, so subscribing to a service I would rarely use doesn’t seem logical at this point, I only tend buy films I really like, so don’t seem them as a wasteful expense, and dvd’s are cheap these days, even new blu-rays can be picked up for a reasonable cost. So it’s just a simple matter of use really. If I watched a lot of films I would probably subscribe to a service. I also don’t tend to have a very broad taste when it comes to films and TV, as I said, I rarely watch either.

I still buy dvds. I go to superstore and only buy ones that are 3 for $10. I only buy dvds i really like and i dont watch much tv. I would rather be able to watch it as many times i want whenever or wherever i want.

I still buy DVD’s, yes. If I was to get an account with Netflix or watch anything online, it’d be streaming and my internet bill would go through the roof. i just recently moved out on my own and I am liking the fact that my bill for NOT streaming anythign over the internet is beyond reasonable… I do like DVD’s as well. Just like Chipmunk said, I can watch them as much as I want, whenever I want.

My partner and I never buy any DVDs, but we do have Telstra BigPond Movies. Telstra is the main internet and telecommunication courier in Australia and as long as the household has broadband, if you sign up, you pay as you go, that is every movie you watch, Telstra either charges your home internet bill or you pay via your credit card. The fantastic thing with BigPond Movies, is the movie is on your T-Box for 24 hours so if love the movie, you can watch it over and over again within the 24 hours period and can pause, rewind and go back to it anytime.

I still don’t understand why people buy DVD’s any more.

Almost everyone reading this has internet in their home. Typically a DVD is going to cost around $10 - $20. Even worse, despite what everyone in this thread has said about watching it over and over, they never do. Let’s assume over a year, they watched the movie 2 times.

Discount movies for kids. Because kids are the only people who watch movies again and again.

So let’s do the math.

  1. You already have broadband.
  2. Netflix costs $9 per month for unlimited movies
  3. It costs $4.99 to rent a HD movie on iTunes, your cable box, or Amazon streaming.

So to rent the movie twice, you pay $10.00.

Assume I watch 4 premium movies per month (first run movies).

  • I’m paying $20 from streaming.
  • You’re paying $80 (roughly), from DVD’s

For the DVD you have to have shelf space, they get scratched and unplayable. Your machine gets broken. And if you only watch the movie once, you lose money big time.

Whereas with fixed cost streaming such as Netflix (at least in the States), you get a pretty good catalog. Heck, sometimes they have first run movies too.

So 2 years ago, I gave away all my DVD’s sitting on the shelves gathering dust (which I only watched once or twice). Cancelled my cable, and instead invested in faster broadband $59.99 per month.

When my friends come over, or my kid wants to watch something, their universe of things to watch is not on the shelf. Instead it’s tens of thousands of movies and TV shows on Netflix and Hulu+.

A few times a month, we splurge and rent a movie from iTunes for $4.99. That movie came out on DVD the same time as it does on iTunes. We get our fix, but for $4.99

Now, I don’t have a few hundred DVD’s lying on the shelf gathering dust. I’ve discovered so many movies, Tv shows and other things that I would never have by just buying DVD’s.

And the best part, it costs me less than the price of a single DVD every month.

Actually you can get movies pretty cheap now if you shop right. You pay $4.99 per movie well if you rent 6 movies a month that would be $29.94 plus you pay $9 a month to have it that’s a total of $ 38.94. I buy my movies on sale and only on sale. I get 6 movies for $20 or 3 for $10. I actually do watch my movies more than once. So buying dvds is a better deal for me.
