Beta Fish and Compatible Fish.

I have a Beta Fish and was wondering which types of fish can survive with a beta. Beta are pretty mean and will attack other beta fish if they are put in the same tank.

There are some fish that can live with beta in the same tank but I don’t know which ones. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer #1

I had a male betta with lots of other fish and he did fine tell he died a year and a half later. As long as you put the other fish first your Betta shouldn’t have a problem… make sure the tank is big enough also

Answer #2

My beta that I got about a week ago is just sitting at the bottom of the tank and dont swim around much at all. What can I do to let him have fun and swim around more? Another thing is that he is not eating much. I feed him blood worms. What should I do?

              Thanks,
                    Heath

I have a 80 gal. tank, with one male crown tail Beta, 14 female Betas, one Molly LierTail, 8 neons, 6 black skirt Tetras, 2 Tiger Sucker fish, 1 mickey mouse, one SunBurst molly. They get along great, had to do a time out a couple of times at first with a couple but they are doing fine now. If your Beta is sitting on the bottom could be to cold of a tank, no hiding places, they are’nt big swimmers tho make sure you take out the food he doesn’t eat. Check your water also just to be sure its good.Steve

I just got 2 new male beta fish, an algae eater, and a male gold fish. I have the 2 betas in one tank with a divider and I want to move one of them in with the goldfish and the algae eater but im afraid to. I dont know what will happen and im afraid to take a chance with it, some kind of advice would help a lot.

Answer #5

You should avoid putting other fish with betas. Either the beta will attack and kill the other fish or the other fish is likely to nip at the beta’s long and pretty fins.

Answer #6

nope alyssama, bettas are very dominate creatures the males will kill pretty much anything. females on the other hand are very docile. they dont mind having other fish around, other females are good even an algae eater will work for them. but dont put anything in the with male is my advice…

good luck <3 Laur

I recently set up my own aqarium and have Beta fish in my aquarium.I have 28 gallon one. I have cat fish , ghost cat fish . damation molly and red tale platy and they all seem to be doing fine. I was told my the store that beta fish only are mean to other beta or the fish which have bigger fins. Beta fish usually attack who happens to have a better fins then them so you might want to watch that out. Honestly beta get alongs good with any community fish and i have seen it many places . try it out.

Answer #8

No, definately not a good idea. Oscars are aggressive and would eat your betta within minutes.

Answer #9

I wanted to get an algae eater to put in with my Betta. Is that okay?

Answer #10

DONT DO IT!!! I have NEVER seen a Beta get along with any other fish. Why do you think they are called Chinese Fighting fish==they fight till the death. I even (at the advise of the pet store) tried to place a female in with my male–poor girl got her fins all chewed up!! The males are mean!!

Answer #11

actually if you have enough insert animal here they will get along I cant remember what animal it was… but I know it was a fish … people said to not keep them together … well they put about 50 all together and they didnt hurt each other

Answer #12

I have a male betta and made a mistake of experimenting putting 3 zebra danios, which I’ve read at others forums that they are compatible. The betta had killed one of the danios. It had managed to nipped on the left eye. Rescued the other danios into a separate tank.

Stop besmerching the good name of the most awesome fish ever…

Betta are fine with any tropical community fish as long as it is not another betta or a relative of a betta (like gourami) in which case the betta is the one that is in danger.

I fear more for my betta in my community tanks (with all the fin nippers tearing up his fins) than for the other fish. The betta chase them from their territory sometimes but that’s it, I’ve never seen an actual fight. And even in that case the betta is the likely victim because they are sooo slow. Betta are such slow swimmers it’s easy for the other fish to swim away from them. In general the betta ignore the other fish in tank though.

Just remember that betta are solitary fish so don’t crowd your tank and you will be fine. If you do have problems might help to introduce new fish slowly.

Good tankmates:

Guppies Tetra(can be fin nippers) Bottom feeders like plecos Danios

OK tankmates:

Mollies Barbs(fin nippers) Some docile Cichlids

Bad tankmates (will likely tear betta to shreds): Angel fish Gouramis(most bigger fish at fish stores are either gouramis or cichlids even if it doesn’t say it in their name) Most Cichlids

Bettas usually get along with all sorts of fish as long as they dont have fins flaring out like the male betta and angel fish. I have all sorts of fish in my tank along with the male bettta and they seem to get along great.

Answer #19

Beta’s are verie aggressive but sometimes you canput them in with short finned, quick swimming fresh water fish such as, platys, mollies, barbs, or gouramies. evrie beta is diff. some are less aggressive than others,it just depends what kind you have. Female betas arethe least aggressive. Betas are not good with fancy goldfish there fins are too long.

Answer #27

would putting a beta in with an oscar be a good option ???

Answer #28

alright you are not going to know until you do it. Just remember that fish know what time it is when it comes to fighting. they are both prey and predators. My best recommendation is this: Make sure you have enough tank for the fish to establish respective territories. What that means is that you need maybe ten gallons each with lots of property such as long stacking rocks, castles, driftwood, and plants for sure (Cichlids love to pull plants… I’ll explain a bit later) anything to make a labyrinth for them to patrol and weave in and out of. maybe you should start with one Ciclid, of a smaller fin variety. Some are up in the $15 range some in the $60… once you have the property up, introduce them to separate corners, and see how it goes. You want a fair fight if it breaks out, so make sure to get the brightest Ciclid you can find (males) whatever you do stay away from Oscars (not a Cichlid) and Red Devils. Oscars will try to eat your fighter, and your fighter will take off the long fins of the Oscar. Red Devil will kill anything. Get an Electric Yellow Cichlid (with black fins) or an Electric Blue Cichlid (go for a deep purple with a back - not tail -fin blood red or bright orange). Listen, if any die, you know you did the best thing for them, and they died an honorable death doing exactly what they love to do - fight.

I have my Betta living happily with several Guppies, 2 African Frogs, 2 cat fish, 2 plecos and a Platy…I will be getting more Platy as they prefer to school. My mother has her Betta with a school of neon tetras, cat fish, plecos, African frogs and Guppies, all with out any problems. I understand that as long as you do not add a fish with long showy fins, which the Betta may interpret as competition, you will fine. Here a few sites on compatibility which may help you… http://www.timstropicals.com/Compatibility/NameResults.asp http://nz.answers.yahoo.com/search/search_result;_ylt=AgKEvi.aur318azpto9o_53IZwx.;_ylv=3?p=Platy+compatable+with+Betta Best of luck to in your choices,

I have a red male betta that I got at wal-mart about a month ago he is doing great thank God! I have him in a 1 gallon goldfish bowl and he seems to like it but loves to stay in the plastic weeds. I was wondering if I should get a bigger tank with a filter because I have to change the water every week because the goldfish bowl doesn’t have a filter. also I ready they like warmer water. is that true? so I was thinking about a 3 or 5 gallon tank with a light and heater. any advice on this? I feed him the betta food pelets and he seems to be liking that. but my concern is his fins. there a little ragged looking. they were like that when I bought him but he was the best looking one they had at the time. are there any good books for beginner bettas? I had one a few years ago but he didn’t live long. thanks for any advice! I really appreciate it. please email me your replies if you would. I won’t remember to check this site. :) tennvolsfan780 at yahoo dot com

Answer #31

We have had male bettas in a tank with platys, guppies, plecos, barbs, mollies, danios and harlequin resporias and they get along just fine. We used to have a male betta in a tank all by itself, as we were told that they are not compatible with other fish, to later found out differently. DO NOT PUT GIANT DANIOS IN WITH BETTAS OR OTHER FISH. Apparently they are classified as semi-aggresive, and boy that is an under statement. They killed our male and three female bettas in a matter of four days, and also got very aggressive toward our other fish. I hope this helps.

Beta fish do get along with other fish. I had mollies, sword fish, cat fish, sharks, and all kinds of other community fish in with my betta. it did great. My beta finally died after a couple years and I just never got another, but they were in a 20 galllon too until I got my 35 and 55 set back up after I moved. If you put smaller fish in with it I recommend 4 or 5 of they to make a community. I recomend that though with any small fish going in with bigger fish.

Answer #34

You could get virtually any other type of fish, as long as it isn’t another beta, especially not a male (if that’s what you already have).

Answer #35

I have my beta in with 4 mollies, 4 guppies, 6 neon tetras, 2 angel fish and a cat fish and they all get along like a house on fire. just make sure there is somewhere for your beta to hide as sometimes he likes a bit of alone time, I have a shipwreck at the bottom of my tank with lots of holes in it and when my beta is in there the other fish dont go near it. I guess its their way of letting him know hes the king of the castle…

Answer #36

GET A 3 GALLON TETRA TANK FROM WALL MART AND SOME LIVE PLANTS. I DID FOR MY BETTA AND HAS BEEN HEALTHY 3 MONTHS

Answer #37

Bettas are great with other fish, as long as they’re certain kinds of fish. Some bettas are a lot more aggressive as well, and just plain won’t get along with anyone. It really depends on your fish and its personality. But to the people who are complaining that their goldfish died when being put in with your betta: Bettas and goldfish DON’T GO TOGETHER!!! Bettas are tropical fish, and require a higher temperature than the goldfish can survive. If the temperature is right for the goldfish, your betta will die. I don’t care what the pet stores say or do- if you want your goldfish and/or betta to survive, get the water at the right temperature, which isn’t the same for both!!

I have a 220 gal tank with four 12”+ Koi and smaller comets and fan tails. Another four regular gold slightly over 3”. I put a betta in with them, but the next day, no trace of the betta has been found. I read somewhere betta like to hide in rocks and drift wood hollows. Could it be the betta is hiding? The betta had lived with three gold fish for nearly a year until the owner moved and asked me to take them.

Answer #40

peaceful,non-fin nipping, short finned, fish I reccomend white clouds, and corycats avoid small guppies, neon tetras, and barbs (cherry barbs are good with bettas but only cherry barbs)make sure your tank is well filtered and larger than 5 gallons NEVER put female bettas with male bettas nor male bettas with male bettas
