Beta and Neon Fish together?

I am a novice at raising fish. Infact, I’ve only had 1 fish my whole life and it was a betta whom jumped overboard. I just bought a 5 gallon starter tank with all the accessories and pretty things. I’ve added a betta today. I want to add neon glow fish, but I’m not sure how it will work out. Yeah I know, don’t overcrowd. I wanted to get maybe two or three and see what happens. Anyone done this before? As far as I can tell the betta we got today has been so far laid back. Not a lot of activity, but not lifeless to make me think somethings wrong with it.

You can put female bettas in with the neons but if you have a male he will likely kill the neons. Male bettas can occasionally be in tanks with other semi-aggressive fish but a 5 gallon tank will not be large enough to support any of these fish.

well im not sure how your betta will act but when I had my male betta with all of my golddfish he only attacked them when they got up in his face, well he dident really like attack them he just like gave them a little warning snap on their tail. other wise he was fine.

I have a year old betta with 4 glo fish and a golden algae eater. They are in a 10 gal and have no issues untill one of my pink glo’s got bloated and laying eggs. I’m trying to save the fry because I have seen her eat a few before I could make it out to the pet store. And now, Pinky- the betta male- is making a bubble net.

I ended up adding 2 really cheap fish to test my betta. So far, only a couple of hours in, they are doing fine. The cheap fish (rosy reds) seem a little hyper though but they are only showing interest in each other so I am pleased. If it changes, I’ll let you know. As I said, these are only trial fish, probably give them away when I get the neons so that I am not overcrowding. Thanks!

Bettas are extremely inactive because they’ve been bred to live in low-oxygen environments.

And unless there are other male betas or extremely brightly colored fish in the tank, they’ll be fine, unless you get this one relatively uncommon species of Betta.

In fact, get a single female Betta to go with him. They do well when they have a mate around, but they’re a one on one kinda fish, not one for a herd. And make sure there’s some stuff to build a nest with, because a male Betta will actually build a nest aound the female’s eggs and protect them till they hatch(but the neons might eat the babies).

And the rule is one gallon per inch of fish. You can crowd a little more, like with crabs and shrimp and stuff, but I find the one inch rule to be most effective.
