Who believes we should start boycotting walmart over its proposed use of RFID chips in its clothes?

Answer #1

if that is where we are headed then we are going to have to boycott everything from all electric appliances to tv’s to everything because there are chips in everything today! Soon they are going to make us wear one & lie about it saying it is for health information so doctors dont need to get your chart for a visit just scan you like an item…before you know it they wont be calling us by name but by bar code…should we boycott everything & anything & cause a war…us against the government?! cant do that hun…as much as a lot of people would rather fight there is no stopping the changes…the more advanced we get, the worse it is for us…that is life!

Answer #2

There was already talk about implanting them in humans not too long ago….. Big uproar, and then it magically became quiet about it all….

Answer #4

I’m sorry but what are RFID chips?

Answer #5

These chips are removable. Throw it away when you get home. Take a deep breath.

Answer #6

how do you remove them?

Answer #7

I don’t see anyone effectively boycotting them — it would take mass hysteria to get enough people….

While there are many arguments on the reasons for the uses of these chips — I don’t think it’s some terrible plan to track anyone. It IS a plan to track their stuff though — makes things cheaper (in some peoples minds) because the amount of work to manually enter in everything when they can just run a box with a lot of things thru a scanner and be done with it…. Humans make errors, machines just do their thing….

Answer #8

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification.

Put in other words, the RFID chip (as most people call it) is part of a type of radio that has a special code in it that when activated it can send (and the scanner can read) the information from it. It has no battery, it can’t track you, at least not directly, it just carries information about the item it’s attached to.

They’ve been around for a LONG time in one way or another. You could say that barcodes on things you buy were the beginning of them — now, they have a little electronic chip that can hold more information, so it can offer more abilities with what you can use them for….

Think of something the size of a grain of rice — that when put near a special scanner, turns on, sends some small amount of information about the item it’s attached to…. That’s it…

You can of course take that WAY further — like the talk of having your medical records stored in them. Maybe some day, but for now the closest we have to that are credit card type of ID’s that have some information, but far from anything like your medical records…. But — I’ve gone way beyond what you asked haven’t I? :)

Answer #9

here here!

Answer #10

They will hang on the garment like a price tag that you can probably break by yanking on it. I found that on the consumerist.com.

Answer #11

Generally — if they’re IN the clothing…. they remove them when they ring you up — In some cases though — you can’t remove them — unless you happen to see where they are.

They’ve had them IN their shoes for a long time — actually INSIDE the heels — clearly, you can’t take that out without ruining the shoes or sneakers…

Clothes on the other hand – would likely be in an area where there’s material to hold it in place…. or, it could be as simple as a sticker-like label….

Answer #12

Years ago Walmart sold lipstick that contained RFID chips to test the technology. A disgruntled Proctor & Gamble employee leaked the story to the media and Walmart admitted that in the test they used the chips for more than just inventory control. Imagine if while you are carrying lipstick (or whatever) you could be tracked every time you enter or leave Walmart. As RFID chips get smaller and cheaper they could be embedded into more items. The most likely use of this technology is for marketing but as valuable as this information is expect its use to spill over into other areas much like the Event Data Recorders “black boxes” in cars help manufacturers make safer cars but since they record events in the seconds before collisions can also be used as evidence against you. Your own car could rat you out!

It is just a little more erosion of our already dwindling privacy.
