Why does the US army spend 7 million dollars to sponsor NASCAR?

“Rep. Betty McCollum says Army spends millions on NASCAR team sponsorship”…and yep, turns out they have been spending this for a few years. Sorry, I don’t watch NASCAR…and you’d get a similar impact if you know, you sent soldiers to high schools to talk about their experiences, coach some games, etc (and among the very audience you’re trying to reach, right?).

OR am I wrong and sponsoring NASCAR when the state governments are firing elementary school teachers is just what the federal government should be doing?

Answer #1

Cuz people like to watch it!

Answer #2

And i agree it is kind of wrong but then again when you pull away from that people who buy tickets and food and spots to camp all of that money goes away so i could see is it was cut in bugets some but really i think they makes a bunch in a year

Answer #3

Thats a good question. Why do they?

Answer #4

According to the Washington Wire, it’s a recruiting tool for the army and falls under their advertising budget. What’s insane is that $7 million is just a mere fraction of the army’s actual advertising and recruiting budget.

Answer #5

On a stupid logo on the side of a car. For recruitment. So they can continue to fight two unnecessary wars abroad. Possibly a third, if things in Libya do not calm down… Are you kidding me! Bring our Men & Women home. & then we’ll talk 6 figures on recruitment… Give the power back to the people….

Answer #6

It is difficult to recruit soldiers during wartime; especially when long repeated deployments are likely. NASCAR fans are probably the best demographic for the Army to tap. 36% of NASCAR fans are 18-34 and tend to be upper-middle class and patriotic. NASCAR is probably a good investment for Army marketing. I don’t know how you could fault the Army for using NASCAR unless you are against recruitment in general.

Answer #7

It’s their largest recruiting base… is the simple answer.

You’re making a more profound point though. This is testament to the realization President Eisenhower and writers warned the American people against… an establishment of the military industrial complex. All legislation… all political maneuvering is in furtherance to this end. The receiver government pays no heed to the wishes or interests of the landless peasantry. We have become cogs in the war machine… expendable.

Answer #8

Fair point maybe I’m against recruiting in general…fact is, I was very close to signing up at one point but they wouldn’t guarantee me the program I said I wanted…and no, I don’t watch NASCAR.

Answer #9

to distract americans from the war and pay attention to nascar……

Answer #10

Maybe because they’re unaware of how much America is in debt? 0.o
