How do you approach a group of people you don't know at a party?

I was at a family friend’s party last week and I didn’t know half the people there, but most of the others seemed to know each other. While everyone one occupied I was just sitting there looking at my phone. I wanted to go up to some people and start a conversation, but I don’t know what to say. People were in large groups and if I went up to them and said “Hi” it would be really awkward. So what should I do???

Well listen to the conversation and see what you can add. Like if you hear them talking about jaycee dugard say something like “hey I didn’t mean to eaves drop but are you talking about jaycee, I can’t believe she is still alive.” Or something of it. That is how I interact with everyone.
