very good answer animus- what it means is Automat Kalashnikova- meaning “automatic kalashnikov assault rifle” Kalshnikov being the rifles inventer, and the rifle being “full AUTOMATIC”.

as stated above the 47 comes from the year it entered production- 1947 caliber 7.62x39mm russian.

there are a multitude of varients- stamped receiver AKMs, shortened AKSUs, RPKs,AKSs, AK-74s which was obviously produced in 1974 and was chambered for the 5.45x39mm russian cartridge to counter our own 5.56x45mm round from the viet nam war era to the present day.
