What exactly does it mean to be agnostic?

What exactly does it mean to be agnostic I know it means that you believe that god may or may not exist Anyways being agnostic and maybe not christian mean you will get a 1 way ticket to hell

Answer #1

Actually captainassassin there is this one guy who claims to have gone to Hell and come back and wrote a book on it. I think the book is called, ‘30 minutes in Hell’ or something like that.

…yep… so he ‘claims’ …23 Minutes In Hell… its crap.

He just wrote (poorly) a story around several biblical verses, and a few other sources.

Answer #2

So if you’re not a Christian, you have to go to the Greek underworld - a concept that early Christians ripped off and folded into their own brain washing system?

Answer #3

No… that means you’re ‘undecided’

Answer #4

technically yeah

to go deeper into detail it basically means one who is skeptical about the existence of God but doesn’t profess atheism. You don’t know basically. I shouldn’t of put you don’t know what you believe in, that is undecided, yes, but basically you just don’t know, unsure(of the existence of god).

Answer #5

No, you’re still describing one who is ‘undecided’

The core principle of Agnosticism its the belief that NOBODY KNOWS. The only thing that comes close to an exception would be ‘soft agnosticism’ among the many variations…

Strong agnosticism — The view that the question of the existence or nonexistence of an omnipotent God and the nature of ultimate reality is unknowable by reason of our natural inability to verify any experience with anything but another subjective experience.

Soft Agnosticism — The view that the existence or nonexistence of God or gods is currently unknown but is not necessarily unknowable, therefore one will withhold judgment until/if more evidence is available.

Apathetic Agnosticism — The view that there is no proof of either the existence or nonexistence of God or gods, but since any God or gods that may exist appear unconcerned for the universe or the welfare of its inhabitants, the question is largely academic anyway.

Agnostic Theism — The view of those who do not claim to know existence of God or gods but still believe in such an existence.

Agnostic Atheism — The view of those who do not know of the existence or nonexistence of God or gods, and do not believe in them.

Ignosticism — The view that a coherent definition of God must be put forward before the question of the existence of God can be meaningfully discussed. If the chosen definition isn’t coherent, the ignostic holds the noncognitivist view that the existence of God is meaningless or empirically untestable. A.J. Ayer, Theodore Drange, and other philosophers see both atheism and agnosticism as incompatible with ignosticism on the grounds that atheism and agnosticism accept “God exists” as a meaningful proposition which can be argued for or against.

Anyways, I am Agnostic. MOST Agnostics believe it is impossible to prove that there is a God and that he exhists. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t believe in God but rather it’s impossible to have physical proof. And people saying “Look around you what do you see? All this beautiful life, how can there not be a God?” Then you look around and say, “Can you prove it?” It just doesn’t work out when you talk to others about it usually.

Answer #7

I’m Agnostic. And I pray to God. Agnosticism, simply put, is someone who follows a faith, but has many many questions of it, so they aren’t sure whether to believe it the way they hear it or not.

Uhhh… you don’t sound agnostic to me, unless its some form I’ve never heard of. You sound more ‘non-denominational’ or simply ‘undecided’ …a deist maybe?

Anyways being agnostic and maybe not christian mean you will get a 1 way ticket to hell?

Nobody knows, since no one has ever been to hell before, nor knows for sure if it even truly exists. It’s all pure speculation. Do you BELIEVE in the christian versions of heaven & hell?

Simply a Rose to brighten your day,         And maybe lessen the cares in your way;         And also, too, to help you to know,         That in knowing you, many others grow!

  ag·nos·tic (ăg-nŏs’tĭk) n.

One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God. One who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism. One who is doubtful or noncommittal about something.

Answer #9

It basically means you don’t know what you believe in, though you may have an idea you’re not sure

Answer #10

thatgirl - you should check the undecided box… not the agnostic…

Answer #14

Agnosticism (Greek: α- a-, without + γνώσις gnōsis, knowledge; after Gnosticism) is the philosophical view that the truth value of certain claims — particularly metaphysical claims regarding theology, afterlife or the existence of God, gods, deities, or even ultimate reality — is unknown or, depending on the form of agnosticism, inherently unknowable.

Demographic research services normally list agnostics in the same category as atheists and non-religious people[1], using ‘agnostic’ in the newer sense of ‘noncommittal’[2]. However, this can be misleading given the existence of agnostic theists, who identify themselves as both agnostics in the original sense and followers of a particular religion.

Philosophers and thinkers who have written about agnosticism include Thomas Henry Huxley, Robert G. Ingersoll, and Bertrand Russell. Religious scholars who wrote about agnosticism are Peter Kreeft, Blaise Pascal and Joseph Ratzinger, later elected as Pope Benedict XVI.
