Is it better to adopt a young or older dog?

I’m thinking of adopting a dog, perhaps a German Shepard, but it doesn’t really matter, it doesn’t really matter about the age either, but do you think that it’s easier to connect with and build a good bond with younger dog rather than an older one? All opinions appreciated.

Younger cuz then u can train them, the older they r the more set in thr ways they r

I have had a number of dogs in my time. We adopted a 7 year old St Bernard and we couldn’t have had a more loyal dog. He could have been ours from a puppy. We have also had puppies, a lot of work .. training and the house training, putting up with the chewing and breaking his natural instincts with our legs, but in the end so totally worth it.

Choosing a young or older dog is a choice only you can make. Either way it can be a rewarding experience.

Answer #3

young because you can train them easier and they wont die as soon

Answer #4

I would say younger.. so it would get used to you and the place etc.. also you can train it and such so it would be more obedient that an older new dog

Answer #5

It depends on if you have young children, as with an older dog you can not tell what they will be like towards children, but with a puppy, you can train the pup as well as any children, how to react to each other, the child needs to be seen by the dog that he or she is above them in status

Answer #6

I’m not having kids for a while so that’s no worry, but i understand what you mean. I do want a dog that gets along with anyone who comes over. Thank you.

Answer #7

i’d say younger but thats cause i’ve never had a a dog that was old when we got them. i think that older dogs will be difficult to train

Answer #8

my advice if you want a soft, loving, and over friendly, would be a King Charles Cavalier, I have 3 of them, and also have 9 grandchildren, and these dogs are brilliant with them, we also have 4 cats who the dogs clean they are friendly with all other animals, my dogs have never growled at another dog, but have had dogs growl at them,

Answer #9

It really depends on what you want out of a dog. If you want a dog that you can train the way you want, you should get a younger dog, but if you don’t like messes all over your house you should get an older dog because they are normally already trained.

Answer #10

It would be better to adopt one thats younger just cause you can train them how you like, without anyone elses influences he has come into contact with… BUT soo many people want puppies and no one buys the older dogs, so I kinda feel bad for them…. Cause no one wants them, cause they all want puppies.

Answer #11

depends.older dogs it’s sad..nobody usually wants them because they aren’t so young&cute anymore but they still need to be loved you know?they need more attention though&the heartbreak of loosing the dog someday soon some people just can’t handle.so if you think you’d like to adopt an older dog go for it.tons of people go for the puppies :/

Answer #12

I would get a young one.

Answer #13

i like to adopt both! i love dogs! but i like adopting older dogs because those are the ones that don’t usually get chosen. but its ultimately up to you! :) no matter what you choose yu will have lots of fun! (:

Answer #14

thanks, i’ll look into them(:

Answer #15

Better in what ways? You will have to specify what you call better.Other than that normally younger ones are a better choice because you then have them fully under your hand and you can teach and train them to a type of pet you want for example: You may want an active and atheletic dog or you may want a silent, peaceful dog.You choice will be yours then what type do you want to make them but if you adopt an older dog then they will have already built characters and they will act according to their built character weather you like it or not.

A safe and better choice is to get a younger one.

Answer #16

Honestly, I would say older. A lot of older dogs are put down because most people want to adopt a younger one. I would want to give those older dogs an opportunity to escape the pound. You can still train older dogs and they are just as nice and loving as younger ones. They also don’t require as much constant attention as the puppies. I have a German Shepard puppy right now and I have to make sure he’s not falling off my bed or chewing on things. And he cries constantly. He’s a hassle :P But really, I suggest you adopt an older dog (:

Answer #17

Younger ones are better to bond with, bit either would be just fine

Answer #18

It’s better to adopt a dog than to buy one :). I would say it doesn’t really matter that much. You can train any dog with enough love and patience. Puppies will probably be easier to train but we have adopted many animals which were adult dogs and we didn’t have any problems with any of them.
