How does adderall work for people who actually need it?

Ive never read anything on it and im curious as to how it works. I know when people who dont need it take it, they speed from it. So how does it not have that affect on a person who actually needs to be prescribed to it?

Answer #1

It changes the chemicals in your brain and allows you to concentrate and be able to handle the little things in life most of us take for granted. Its all about chemical imbalances.

Answer #2

When I was on adderall it just made me blah, I was focused but didn’t really feel or care about much at all. Same goes for caffeine it doesn’t give me a buzz or wake me up in any way.

Answer #3

Some times it takes months to get the right dosage, my daughter it took me about 8 months for her not to feel that way.

Answer #4

I stopped taking itm I find no need to dr*g myself to be “normal” I do perfectly fine, gotten straight A’s throughout college and close to becoming a pharmacist. I think ADD is a lable for any child thats hyper and it’s absurd.

Answer #6

Answer #7

ADHD is believed to be the result of a shortage of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine. Norepinephrine is the “fight of flight” neurotransmitter which is also responsible for helping us focus on important tasks. Dopamine is associated with motivation and the satisfaction we feel from completing a task or a job well done. If you think of the characteristics of ADHD: difficulty focusing, disorganization, procrastination, and tending not to finish tasks this makes sense.

Several medications increase the amount of norepinepherine and/or dopamine. Psychotimulants increase production of neurotransmitters while antidepressants, 2nd generation antipsychotics, and some blood pressure medications reduce the rate neurotransmitters are consumed. All of these medications are used in the treatment of ADHD though not all are FDA approved and are prescribed off-label for this purpose.

To a certain extent psychostimulants help anyone focus, organize, and feel motivated; this is why coffee, Coke, Mountain Dew and other caffeine containing beverages and tobacco which contains nicotine help people get through the day; both caffeine and nicotine are psychostimulants. Many people with undiagnosed ADHD self-medicate with large amounts of caffeine and/or nicotine. There is a large psychostimulant black market for students taking important tests. Some people with ADHD hoard medications since the pills can be very valuable to other students looking for any edge they can get for their SAT, ACT or GRE tests.

For people with ADHD the effects of psychostimulants can seem paradoxical.. Instead of stimulating they seem calmer. This comes from their their improved ability to focus their energy toward productive ends.

Answer #8

Ideally those with ADHD

Answer #9

sorry, prematurely submitted. I meant to say that ideally those with ADHD learn to manage it without medication. However, some people are not helped enough by coaching and learning life skills can take years during which the student can fall behind. loose self-esteem, and do self-destructive things.
