How to add Fractions?

Okay okay, I know this is kind of Elementary school ; But I just recently started school again (I was out of school for about a year) and I forgot how i’m suppose to add fractions along with Whole numbers. (Example : 3 1/4 + 8 7/8 = ? )

Onto the question. I’m basically correcting a test I took. The question was : ‘Mrs. Largo has 3 5/6 of yarn on a spool. She adds 2 3/4 yards to the spool. How many yards of yarn will she have on the spool?’ I didn’t know how to do this, So i just went on and added 3 5/6 + 2 3/4 = 5 8/10. I just added everything.

Well, I got the answer wrong. I’ve tried looking up how to do this, but nothing is seems to help. Can anyone explain how i’m suppose to do this?

Convert the fractions to irregulars, then find a common denominator. Then add the fractions together So, 3 5/6 would be 23/6, then 2 3/4 would be 11/4 To find the common denominator, simply multiply the denominators. 6x4=24 You then multiply the numerators by whatever you multiplied the denominators by, so you do 11x6=66 and 23x4=92 So you would have 66/24 + 92/24 You then add the numerators, and convert 158/24 back to a mixed number

first change those mixed numbers into improper fractions (here’s a link on how to do that http://funadvice.com/r/3o57p97o8e. so 3 5/6 would be 23/6, and 8 7/8 would be 11/4. now you have to find a common denominator between 23/6 and 11/4, which is 24. so put 24 as both the denominators. 6 times 4 is 24, so you have to multiply 23 times 4 which is 92. 4 times 6 is 24, so you have to multiply 11 times 6 which is 66. now you have 92/24 + 66/24 which equals 158/24. so the final answer after you convert 158/24 back into a mixed number is 6 14/24.
