How do you explain the conflicting arguments?

The Bible says that on the sixth day of creation, God created animals. This would include dinosaurs. Also on the sixth day, humans were created. Logically, this means that humans and dinosaurs were living simultaneously. However, all anthropological and paleontological evidence shows that humans lived much (many million years) later than dinosaurs, based on many fossils that have been found. How do you explain the conflicting arguments?

Answer #1

actually, EVOLUTION explains everything, the bible explains nothing, why??? Because the bible was written by committee 1500 years ago. Why were there no dinosaurs in the bible, because MAN didnt know about dinosaurs then, which just proves that MAN wrote the bible, not god. The big bang theory holds much more water than the bibles argument that some divine daddy is lurking in the clouds above us waiting for us to screw up so he can damn us to hell. Thats just CRAZY talk. They also thought the world was flat then and that if you sailed far enough, you would fall of. That why there also isnt anything in the bible about a little thing we like to call GRAVITY. There are many inconsitencies in the bible. Look the whole thing boils down to one answer, early politics. In those days there werent elections or polls or caucuses. There was chaos and order, pagans, christians, and jews. Well christianity was on the rise much like islam throughout the world today, and in order to cease the chaos, Constatine united his nation under ONE religion, Christianity. Christianity won a popularity contest thats all, it was the most reasonable faith then, unfortunately that cant be necessarily said for it today. I am all for believing in whatever you want, but facts are facts. We are derived from NATURE, we are made up of elements, SCIENTIFICALLY. That doesnt mean there isnt a god, but for all we know, the Scientologists are right and we are just some Zoot 2nd graders Chem project. I hope he gets a C-…

Simple the dating systems have errors. That is why there is these conflicting arguments.

Yes, all measurements have margins of error, but not to the extent of being able to confuse 4.5 billion years with 6000! The error bars are on the order of about 1% rather.

And even if all dating methods were somehow shown to be invalid - something nobody has come even close to doing - there’s a plethora of physical evidence that demonstrates the earth has to be millions of years old at an absolute minimum. Geologists have known this since the late 17th century, based on findings of successive strata of freshwater and saltwater fossils that prove that certain areas have been subsequently both below and above the ocean - more than once - a process that would take millions of years.

These geologists didn’t have carbon isotope dating, of course, and this was even before Darwin published his theory of evolution. They simply followed the evidence and determined the earth had to be millions of years old at a minimum - a conclusion all subsequent science has confirmed.

A good, thorough takedown of the Young Earth Creationists’ claims is here: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/08/yes_millions_of_years.php

And just to give non-YECs an idea of how absurd this is: 6000 years ago is approximately when the Babylonians invented Beer.

Answer #3

to katelyn being an atheist…there is scientifical evidence on how EVERYTHING was created if you paid attention in science class you would know that. and then you have the bible.. The bible is not proof it is a story. What actual proof do you have outside of the bible…and I mean actual proof not miracles and all that. And stop worrying about it…people believe what they want to believe they are not going to change their minds. People think the bible is right and people think evolution is right thats it…stop trying to explain or understand why people think the way they do about this or what is god and all that stuff because none of it can be explained or should be explained. it should be left a mystery.

Answer #4

6000 years ago is approximately when the Babylonians invented Beer.

So it was beer that started all this nonsense.

Eternallymisinformed, you really should stop embarassing yourself on these threads.

* Being an Athiest makes NO sense, How do you explain EVERYTHING that’s been made and created?

How was god created? If you allow for god to just exist uncreated, then why do you not allow for nature to just exist uncreated? “god” is not a meaningful answer to any well thought out question.

Answer #6

Being an Athiest makes NO sense, How do you explain EVERYTHING that’s been made and created?

You develop theories and explain it by observing the world around you.

Did it just appear? No

How do you KNOW that it didn’t just appear?

Answer #7

In response to the original question: Easy. The bible is either wrong, or allegorical.

Answer #8

I would just like to know who wrote the book of genesis if nobody was there to see it…and even then, when did they learn to write?

Where do the stories come from…?

Wait - let me guess…God dictated and some fellow wrote it down. Magical.

Answer #9

It’s easy to explain…the Bible is simply always right no matter what! The Bible says pi = 3, so pi = 3, and that’s that.

:snark:

Answer #10

people are gonna believe what they want if you believe it, it exists for you if not,,then no

Answer #11

Yeah, But see, Being an Athiest makes NO sense, How do you explain EVERYTHING that’s been made and created? Did it just appear? No.

Answer #12

A day in the life of a human is very different (and probably WAYYY shorter) than a day in the life of God, I would suspect.

I would also suspect that humans don’t always get their facts straight.

I would also assume that the time continuam would be very different for a being that does not die and does not necessarily live chronologically.

Answer #13

I dont believe that b/c I’m an Athiest. I think it’s impossible b/c (as far as I know) it doesnt say in the Bible about the dinosaurs even though we know they were alive. so I don’t know how to answer your question- ask your parents/family??

Answer #14

another thing is not many people who believe in the bible believe in dinosaurs because they werent mentioned..so you kindof gotta believe in one or another…dinosaurs existed in BC not AD…B/C before christ…before the bible…the time line was actually made on christian terms…bc and ad…so it is all right to believe in both if you look at it that way. but people just dont.

Answer #15

Actually, yes, Katelyn. With a time span of almost 14 BILLION years and the various laws of physics, it does make sense.

If people want to claim ‘God’ as a spiritual force that gives souls, that’s their business. But it is the right wing fundamentalist religions that try to use the bible to bend science.

Science is not trying to dictate to religion. It tries to examine and explain the natural world. Creationists, and Young Earthers, and anti-evolutionists are doing a disservice to all by fighting so hard to shove their religious beliefs on everybody else. Science and religion are not in conflict. They are totally different spheres of human thought, different disciplines entirely.

I do wish you well. Take care and Good Luck!!

Answer #17

Wooow, It hurts me to see so many people who don’t believe in God. Say hi to the devil for me when you die, k? And if anything, Think of it this way, Why not believe in God, Just in case. He’s there. And you’re all ignoring him. Scientists are wrong ALL the time by the way. Oh, And I am VERY good in Biology, Thank you very much.

Answer #18

Uhm how about the conflicting stories WITHIN the bible

Creation is described in Genesis 1:1 to 2:3 as occurring in six “days”:

Day 1: creation of light and its separation from darkness.
Day 2: separation of the sky and oceans.
Day 3: separation of land from the oceans; spreading of plants and grass and trees across the land.
Day 4: Creation of the sun, moon, and stars.
Day 5: Creation of sea animals and birds.
Day 6: Creation of the land animals. Creation of humanity, "someone like ourselves" (Living Bible).
Day 7: God rested. Followers of the Documentary Hypothesis believe this to have been a later addition, 4 placed there to give theological justification for the Sabbath (Saturday as a day of rest).

The Second Creation Story; Genesis 2:4 to 2:25: This is a different description of the creation of earth’s life forms. Most mainline and liberal biblical researchers attribute this section to “J,” a writer who lived in the 9th century BCE (some say 10th century; others say after the Babylonian exile). Again, religious conservatives trace the authorship to Moses, and generally believe that this is a simple restatement of the earlier creation story. The author of Genesis 2 writes that

at first, there were no plants or grain present, because God had not yet sent rain.
God made Adam out of earth; this is a belief common to many early Pagan religions in the Middle East.
God created plants and herbs, Adam, the Garden of Eden, trees, birds and animals
God performed the first surgical operation, removing a rib from Adam and transforming it into the first woman, Eve.

Conflicts between the creation stories: There are some apparent inconsistencies between the first and second creation accounts:

There may be a conflict over the number of days over which creation happened.
Genesis 1:3 and subsequent verses say that God created the universe in six days.
In Genesis 2:4, some translations, including the King James Version, imply that it took one day. More details
In the first account, God created fruit trees before Adam and Eve; in the second account, God created Adam, then the fruit trees, then Eve.
In the first account, God created animals before Adam and Eve; in the second account, God created Adam. then the animals, then Eve.
Genesis 1:20 describes how God had "the waters bring forth ...fowl" ; in Genesis 2:19, God formed them "out of the ground".
In the first account, God created the fish on the 5th day; in the second account, the fish of the sea were not created at all.

Answer #19

Think of it this way, Why not believe in God, Just in case. He’s there. And you’re all ignoring him.

This is called Pascal’s Wager. Let me ask you: Why don’t you believe in Allah, or Zeus, or Krishna? They might exist, so you should believe - just in case.

Scientists are wrong ALL the time by the way.

So is religious dogma. The difference is, scientists admit they’re wrong, figure out why they’re wrong, and improve their theories to account for it.
