Why isn't my 4-month-old ever satisfied?

My 4 month old son from day one has had a never ending stomach. He has GERD, and the fact hes got such a huge appetite, my Ped. said to but cereal in all his bottles. And to put in enough to make it thick. So there was never any measuring. This worked for a while, then he got to acting like he did before…never being satisfied. So at 2 1/2 months I was given the okay to give him baby food through a bottle and a large nipple, a few times a day. This only worked when I gave it to him, the other plain bottles with cereal… He would want more… But having GERD if I gave him more, hed spit it all up. I’ve basically been putting up with it trying different schedules and such… And now hes 4 months and 1 week old and he eats a container of food through a bottle every few feedings, 4 oz bottles sometimes with cereal… Sometimes the plain ones dont work. Hes always hungary… When he sleeps during the day its only a couple 15-20 minute cat naps. Once in a blue moon hell sleep one or two good times for an hour. At night he gets a container of fruit, a container of cereal, gets his bath, then gets 4 oz cereal bottle and goes to bed. Sleeps for 3 hours and is up every 2 hours to eat. Through the night I give him cereal bottles. Because regular ones wont even hold him for an hour lol… Im completely out of ideas and I relocated to NC and I dont go to this Ped for another 2 weeks. I dont know what to do? I get told all these things… NOTHING is hurting him. Hes pooping fine, never gets belly aches… hes just so hungary!!! Anyone else experience this? What the heck did you do!?

Is he getting enough protein? That would be my only idea- protein makes a baby feel fuller longer. When my son (now 7 mos.) was 4 mos. he could down 4-5oz of breastmilk. I understand he has GERD, but do you think you are feeding him enough at once? Or, could you maybe feed him more and try Gripe Water (avail. at Target/ Walgreens in the kid’s tummy section) to settle his stomach so he doesn’t spit up? This must be very tough on you! Good luck to you and your son- I hope you figure out what is making your baby so hungry all of the time.

Well, GERD can actually feel like heartburn sometimes, causing a lot of discomfort. Heartburn is actually a symptom of GERD so that may be why your baby doesn’t sleep to long. 80% of people with GERD have a hiatal hernia which causes the heartburn.

As for eating stay away from fruits like oranges, pineapples, and other acid fruits. It will make the GERD worse.

Also it helps to get the baby to be as active as possible after eating to help the digestive track. So a bath or exersaucer can help. My nephew has had GERD his whole life and as he has gotten older it has gotten easier to contain. So just be patient and good luck!

maybe you need to help him find something else to occupy his time with like tummy time with toys, take him outside to watch the birds or take a stroll to the park. Any thing, I haven’t heard of gerd before tho I have 2 children. but it seems sort of serious I think maybe giving him like water intakes is good to cause it gives his body a different source to feed off of other than baby food in a bottle
