Some people are in fact victims of depression but there are also perpetual victims who prefer to live in the self pity mode and will fight anything that moves them away from that comfort zone. The question is which is he? The informer is right, the only person who can honestly do anything, other than, is the person who himself realizes it and is willing to pull themselves out of the self pitty pit. In that respect you can extend a hand out to him, but be careful and watchful if he is making attempts to crawl out with your help or attempting to pull you in with him. If he is not motivated then he has no sense of purpose, you can help him by helping him find what gives him a sense purpose. That may be a vocation he’s thought to hard to reach or avoided all together. What does he believe in, where does he see himself capable of moving closer to what it is he believes in? Sometimes it takes a kick in the butt, forcing them out of their comfort zone and spreading wings they didn’t know they had. But be aware, althought it takes understanding the person, compassion, reinforcing praise when they do…try….It also takes strength to recognize when when it’s you that is sliding down rather then lifting them up.
