Why do periods cause women to be so emotional?

Every time I get (or am close to) my period, I have the craziest mood swings. Even when I try to not be emotional, it never works because I always go insane. Sometimes I take it out on other people and they think I’m crazy haha. What causes this? I know it has to do with hormones but how does that work?

Answer #3

Estrogen levels both drop and increase during the menstrual cycle. This website explains it really well: http://funadvice.com/r/161bt8c9bq3. It says, “Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone control and regulate the serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is the chemical which affects the moods of a person, i.e., if the serotonin levels rise, the person feels elated or happy and if the serotonin levels fall, the person’s mood too becomes low accordingly. During the menstrual cycle, various changes take place in the levels of the estrogen and the progesterone. Thus, they are not able to control the serotonin levels in the brain.”

Answer #4
