What are some extra activities I could look into to help with being accepted into the Police force?

I’m joining the police force as soon as I can. I have a pretty good chance of getting in, because they are looking for young women right now which is… me. I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas of anything I could do to help my chances of getting in? I am considering looking into volunteer firefighting, and taking up some kind of karate or something for self defense etc. I already work out and run/swim etc.

Learning another language is always a good extracurricular if you want to join the police, as a grasp of more than one language will help you be able to communicate with lots of different people. You will be able to deal with people that others may not be able to if they do not know more languages, meaning you are very useful to the force. An actual qualification in a language would be a great asset to you.

Ring your local police station and ask about experience there as well- they may let you ride along with them when out or tour the station to learn more. You can then put this on your CV to show you ahve had a keen interest fot years.

Try and get involved with community projects, maybe charities that help women or help build homes and so on. Showing you get on with, and want to help people, will look good for you and is needed in a good officer.

Any of these will help you get ahead of other applicants, so just do some volunteering, like you say yourself, and just show you have a general interest in your community and have transferable skills, as well as being fit, and you should have no problems :) good luck.

Thanks for that, great info :)

  1. Any kind of community service.

  2. First-responder skills, like CPR, EMT training, etc.

  3. Something that pertains to the particular kind of police work you are ultimately most interested in; for example, crime scene forensics, cybercrime, canine force, undercover work, community relations, etc.

I’m going to look into more community type stuff. But I live in an area where helpers aren’t really needed. We don’t have homeless shelters or anything where they could use my help. I’ve done first aid training which is good, but I think I’ll take it a bit further. I want to be a bike cop so I’m saving up money to get my bike license which is quite hard to get where I live lol. Thanks for the info!

Answer #6

No problem- good luck with it. Do you want to be a specialised officer in any area or just someone who is generally on the streets?

Answer #7

What kinds of things do you mean by “community type stuff”?

Answer #8

I’d like to be a bike cop, and one day I want to do youth aid but I’m not 100% sure about what I want to do from my 20s-30s ish when I will be my fittest. Lol

Answer #9

Any honorary post in service of your town or community will help. Anything where you deal with people. Even if you just read the newspaper to a blind, senile grandpa in an old people’s home. Or if you join any youth organization that does good things, girl-scouts or similar and be a group leader in their holiday camp.
