Why do they say, "you can't help others unless you help yourself"?

I’m having a hard time understanding this saying, can someone explain to me the concept to me? :)

Because you can’t make others happy unless you are happy. If you’re happy then it’s simple to make others happy because you’re not miserable trying to make someone else happy before you. If you’re helped, by yourself, and you have a positive attitude it’s easy to please others, and help others because you’re not unhappy with yourself.. Make sense? Lol, it’s kind of hard to word it the correct way, but this is the best I can come up with.

i really dont kknow i suck at this kind of stuff but i think it would make more sense if it said “you can’t help others before you help yourself”.<- random :D

i think that saying is used mostly towards people who like to help other people all the time. and those people usually have problems of their own that they ignor but need help with. so they really should help themselves before they help other people

Well there’s several reasons for this. Firstly, well to be able to truly help others you have to practice what you preach, or your message comes off hollow, so you need to take care of yourself the same way you want others to take care of themselves. Additionally, if you dont take care of yourself, you end up in what we call burn out, seen commonly in caregiving professionals. Then you can no longer help others.
