What is wrong with high schoolers and cliques in my school band?

OK, so heres the deal. I have 90 people i have to lead in band. Im a drum major i teach them and help them thats what i do. BUT im the Jr. Drum Major the Senior Drum major runs the show. So what has happend is me and the Senior act differently. When i am out on the field, i am all business. Im serious about my work. I try to treat everybody fairly. And the senior is serious about her work too. But when she sees a problem in the band, she sees the person as the problem and picks on the person and bullies them. So when i stand up to defend the person being picked on, all of the Seniors and seniors friends (about half of the band) get angry and now they all hate me. So now I am lost. I want to make my group great but i want to do so by helping everybody, not just my friends. How can i change her ways or what do i do to help her?

You can’t change someone, or even make them see what they are doing or how they are acting is unfair. Your best bet, until you become Sr. Drum Mjr. is to stop trying call her out in front of everyone. It’s like trying to tell your manager what to do, even if they know they are wrong. Everyone will heir on the side of the manager, just to agree with the majority and stay out of the fire. In life this holds true no matter if you are speaking about religion, politics, ethics, etc…People will always think they are right and you cannot change them good or bad, they must learn from their own actions. So stay true to yourself and then after she reams someone next time, take them aside later and let them know it’s not their fault and to keep trying their best. You will make a great Sr. Major next year, hang in there your time is coming!
