What can I write into the covering letter when I apply for a job?

I’ve been applying for a job (a government agency…) in the Internet and they had a questionnaire where I put every job, every training, my languages and skills and everything. The site said they would ask for more if they were interested. Now they send me an e-mail where they asked me to send my certificates and credentials and also a covering letter. What can I put into the letter?

A cover letter is where you sale yourself for the job. You try to make your self stand out, you want to show enthusiasm, but you want it to be short. You want to highlight why they should look at you.

I would send a cover letter in for every job you look at, and write it to suit the company.

Thank you Chris. My problem is, I filled their web questionnaire some days ago, where I had to fill in what I am good at… and why I apply for this job. My entire CV and my skills and all. Now they asked additional info. So I must be among the people they consider. And someone has probably read what I put in the questionnaire. So I’m not sure if I should repeat parts of what I wrote there in my letter. But If I don’t I can’t write anything except I apply for your job …and I’m looking forward to having an interview.

I would then specify qualities in the letter that make you a perfect fit for the job, if you repeat yourself on things you have already wrote, it is not bad, plus people have short memories. I would just say spell correctly, good grammar, and throw in a few larger words, but not to many. I try to make myself sound intelligent but not to the point of sounds like I am trying to talk above them, or sound prude.

The purpose of a cover letter is different from that of a resume or CV. You’ve already given them the latter, in the form of the questionnaire. It would be more or less the same in your application for any job of that sort. The cover letter should focus on why you are their best choice for this particular job. That means you should learn as much as you can about the job before writing it, so you can make it as specific as possible. Identify what you would bring to the position that would be of most direct value to them. If possible, identify a problem or need that you know they have, and how you would be prepared to meet it. You can also say why their position would be the ideal one for you, in the arc of your career. A little repetition of your answers to the questionnaire is ok if it’s in the context I’ve described, but try not to overdo it.

Answer #6

Keep the cover letter short as it should be a short summary of what you have on your C.V. As you are attaching your certificates and qualifications, I would be include to maybe write. —- —- “Complete details of my various skills, experience and qualifications, together with the names and telephone numbers of referees are enclosed.” — —- Source, Samantha Vaccaro. :-)
