Will a misdemeanor stop me from becoming an LVN?

Back in 1998 I was charged with and convicted of Petty Larceny because my sister game me some free milk from a store she used to work at. Will this prevent me from being able to go to school for LVN? I’ve been told so many different things, and I emailed the state board of nursing for Texas but havent recieved a response yet. I have never been charged with anything else.If anyone has an idea on this please let me know.

It really does depend on which state you’re in as laws vary so much. You’ve already contacted the nursing board which is a good step. If you don’t receive a reply just call them but in the meantime try finding a booklet on your states nursing board website which should provide a lot more information. If you already know which school/college you’ll be attending contact them and ask –you may receive a faster reply. Misdemeanors are usually workable but really depends on when the actual conviction date was. Felonies may pose more problems. I was accepted to nursing school and I had to let the school know about my past criminal history (I don’t have one so it wasn’t an issue) but as I said the school will give you a lot of information as well. I’ve had to deal with my state’s AOD counselors board and I felt like pulling my hair out–they’re not always open and they’re very careful as to what information or advice they will give you as to prevent any possible liability on their part. Best of luck to you! -S
