Why wouldn't someone want to discuss their past?

Say you meet someone and they tell you they don’t want to discuss their past because it’s the past and they want to look to the future. Do you think that’s because they have a bad past?

I’m just curious what others think, seems fishy to me.

Answer #1

It just means there not open to talking about it at this point. I have things in my past I dont want to share, the past is the past and when there ready they’ll talk about it.

Answer #2

Yeah, I think when people say that, there’s something they don’t want to relive.. I’ve had a hard life, but I don’t pretend it never happened. What I have been through made me who I am today. It would seem a little fishy, but I think it kind of depends on how long you’ve known them (maybe they don’t trust you yet). But that whole..’’the past is the past’’ is crap to me… it’s impossible to just simply forget about it. Something must have happened to them..
