Why Religion?

Of all the things, why is religion such a touchy subject? We’re not even supposed to talk it in public because people find it so offensive. But why? I mean, it’s only differences in how we think the world was created, and what higher power (if any) exists. But as far as we know, maybe in some parallel universe people find the topic of differences in which way to cook eggs so offensive that they can’t even talk about it. It could be almost anything. Why are people so offended by religion?

Answer #1

When people hold rational positions, they will listen to rational arguments and often change their minds as a result.

When people hold irrational positions - those based on emotions rather than careful consideration, they’re only outlet when those beleifs are challenged is anger.

Since almost all religions are inherently irrational, anger is the most common response when religious ideas are challenged.

Answer #2

Religion is not just a simple issue of whether you believe in a higher power or not… It usually comes with it several touchy subjects… abortion, gender issues, homosexuality, etc efc, the list does go on… and so it isnt a simple matter of what you believe, but that those beliefs have an impact on politics, and therefore an impact on how everyone lives… dont fool yourself into believing that religion is a personal matter…

Answer #3

I have no idea why people find religion so offensive. I understand that no one wants to be forced to believe something they do not but I fail to see why that means the subject cannot be discussed and why we cant simply respect that people hold different viewpoints. Im unsure about what you mean by not being allowed to discuss it in public though, maybe as I am not from the US. Are you actually not allowed to discuss religion in public at all?

Answer #5

Religion is such a touchy subject because people tend to forget that you need to be open minded when it comes to religious discussions.

Answer #6

it all boils down to respecting other people for whatever they believe in by means of not talking against others’ belief no matter how different from yours, then it will not be offensive..

Answer #7

I talk religion and politics with almost everyone, even folks I hold the polar opposite view of mine.

I think the prerequisite for civil discussion is to be able to disagree without thinking less of each other. When you can do that you can discuss any topic civilly. Since I used to be a Christian and a conservative I don’t think of either group as evil, just a little misinformed.

Where I live there are few liberals and even fewer atheists. I feel like I am a goodwill ambassador for both groups.

Answer #8

because a religion is one’s beliefs. their whole world and way of thinking is based on that religion. if that religion is wrong, their whole life has been a lie.

Answer #9

I don’t think that people find religion so offensive. I think they find those that try to cram it down everyone’s throat to be offensive.

Answer #10

Because everyone believes that only their certain religion is right and everyone else is wrong. Nothing can be discussed because everyone has to try and convert every 1 else to their religion.

Answer #11

Because most people don’t like the idea of their existence being FINITE.

Answer #12

Religion and Politics are two subjects that you don’t want to get into discussions with with strangers. Even discussing them with friends can be dangerous.

On those two subjects, people tend to be very set in their beliefs. To attempt to discuss same with them is a threat to their belief system and therefore tends to end in heated arguments.

Answer #13

I think it’s because it’s what people throw themselves into with belief. They think it makes them seem vulnerable. They’re afraid they could be proved wrong, and if they are, then a lot of times their whole sense of perspective of the world and universe would come crashing down around them. And that’s greatly feared, because it’s linked to the unknown. Most the time, it’s the people who’re really strong in belief in their Faith that are willing to talk about it more and open up. That’s what I think at least.

Answer #14

because its controversial..no one want to talk publicly about their religion..to be quiet honest, I get annoyed when people talk about it. im muslim, so whenever I see a lot of active church-goers handing out Bibles, I feel attacked. and im not even religious.

Answer #15

So you’re saying that it’s satan’s fault that people are sensitive to religious differences?

Answer #16

Simple: Eternal truth hits home - there are influences that do not want mankind to know truth, for Satan seeks to destroy.
