Why most people dislike the way their recorded voice sound?

I have never met a person that after hearing themselves talk on a recording or a video said their voice sounded better than they thought. Most people are like really critical in a bad way and don’t like the way they sound. How about videos? Most people I’ve seen are very critical and pick and point how bad they think they look. I do that to myself like, I think I sound like a duck!!! lol!!

Why is that the universal immediate initial response? Feeling uncomfortable instead of liking it?

I’ve noticed that this does not happens to little kids. It starts around 10 to 12 years old. But my five year old thinks she is the most awesome thing on video and love the way she sounds!

Answer #1

I feel the same way

Answer #2

Another thing. I have a hispanic accent but it only bothers me when I hear myself on a recording or on video. I don’t notice it when I talk.

Answer #3

lol. I noticed that. I guess the same reason that we dont like the way we look on a cam corder

Answer #4

Haha I guess it’s because when I talk, in my mind my voice sounds higher pitched, but when recorded I sound like a guy (or at least I think). So didn’t really dig that lol.

Answer #5

its because when you talk and hear yourself talk not on a video, your voice sounds deeper to you because it echoes through your ears. so you always think your voice is deeper than it really is. so when you actually hear it on like vido or something it sounds different than what your used to and you hate it.

Answer #6

Haha, I don’t know why that is. Your voice gets warped somehow. Icould really careless how I sound. Someone oncle told me ‘You sound hot over the phone, I want to bone your voice.’ I sound weird over the phone, though. I don’t know. :)

Answer #7

Sometimes when I talk, it sounds slightly lower sometimes and it makes me sound more like I’m a teenager or young adult.

However, over a headset microphone to teamspeak with other game players in MMOs or when it’s recorded and replayed…I sound like I’m 12. I’m 18. Messed up and annoying? I think so.

But then again, my boyfriend says my voice sounds so adorable so, it doesn’t bother me as much anymore =]

Answer #8

I agree with the familiar theory lol!!. Since we have identify and put our self to that sound since we became aware of who we are, the introduction to a different sound to that identity can only make us feel uncomfortable and will only be met with disbelief.

Is like telling a child that the familiar person they have identify as their mother is not their mother but this other lady is. There can only be a negative outcome.

Answer #9

I agree… its where you have an idea of what your voice sounds like.. and you learn to know it as yours. when you hear yourself on a phone or on msn, or on video or whatever you don’t like it cus its not what you know as your voice. its different and people don’t like it

Answer #10

im not sure. I talk really fat and usually it sounds normal to me but when i hear it played back to me, suddenly i can hear just how crazy fast i am talking. Its horrible. When you hear other peoples voices played back, they often dont sound any different to how they sound normally but for some reason your own voice does sound different. Its horrible!
