Why is the friday after thanksgiving called black friday in the US? I realize that it has something to do with holiday shopping, but why “black friday”? That seems like an odd name for a day.

Answer #1

The reason is called Black Friday is because, before the Civil War, the day after thanksgiving would feature cut-rate prices on slaves, just before the winter season began and their services were less needed.

The origins aren’t known but there seems to be two theories.

Answer #3

The day after Thanksgiving became known as Black Friday because it was the day retailers got out of the red and into the black and began making a profit for the year.

Answer #4

Black Friday has NOTHING WHAT SO EVER TO DO WITH SLAVERY. That’s just sick. Check out wikipedia and it says it started in Philly over traffic and Army vs Navy game.
