Why is my Male dog humping every ones legs?

Every time we go down the beach, as soon as he see’s legs, he runs over and starts humping them? I shout,I drag him off ,he’s persistantly naughty. HELP.

Answer #1

at that stage it will, but if he gets agressive then take it to a vet

Answer #2

Yeah, dogs dont like being smacked. They get aggressive and try to bite you. Or they become scared and fearful. Neither is very helpful. Teaching people or animals that aggression is the way to get things done is really not helpful. This is why abusive parents spawn abusive kids.

And fillet is right, it wont eliminate the problem. It will help, but you really do have to show them who is boss.

Answer #3

Neutering dogs will not eliminate leg humping; even female dogs will sometimes hump someone’s leg.

Dogs do non-sexual humping as a sign of dominance. A dog humping your leg does not recognize that you have higher status in the pack than he or she does. I guess you could say the dog was making you its b???. It isn’t necessary to hit a dog to show dominance and in fact it is counterproductive. The best way to demonstrate dominance to a dog is to exert your authority. Do not let your dog on furniture, your dog should be physically lower than you except when you invite him or her up. You should not give a dog food or affection unless they somehow earn it. If your dog knows any tricks you should make the dog do some tricks before feeding or showing affection. Since in the pack higher status dogs eat before lower status dogs in a pack you should eat something before feeding your dog. Your dog seeing you eat and having to wait until you are done until he is fed will reinforce his status.

While these things may sound mean and harsh a dog who knows his status in a pack will be calmer and happier than one who is constant trying to exert dominance.

Neutering your dog can help make them less aggressive and easier to keep in their place but if you don’t exert your authority they will try to dominate as well.

the smacking routine does do something… teh dogs nose is very sensitive and they dont like it being smacked..

Answer #5

The smacking routine does nothing. Try getting him neutered. It’s probably best anyways. He’s not likely to run off then.
