Why is my dell laptop so slow now it has 4 gigs of ram?

Hello, I just bought a brand new Dell Laptop two months ago. It has 4GB of RAM in it. When I first got it, it was really fast and now it’s getting slow. Could any of you guys tell me why computers don’t last as long as they do now and how to make it faster. Thanks,

Storage has almost nothing to do with slowing it down. Stored data is not active, it does absolutely nothing until you OPEN it.

You probably have way too many PROGRAMS OPEN. Try start => run => ‘msconfig’. If you don’t have msconfig, google it, download it, then run it. Now look at the services and startup tabs. Click “hide microsoft services”. Now look at what’s left and start unchecking things you don’t need all the time. You can still open them later when you do need them. You might accidentally uncheck something you need all the time, so something like your internet might stop working. But don’t worry, all you have to do is run msconfig again and recheck it.

If you uncheck something and it comes back by itself, it may be an obnoxious program or even a virus. Try uninstalling it if you don’t need it, or see if it’s a virus.

If things get really frustrating and you can’t fix it, you can always get your Dell CD and start over. Make backup copies of your documents on another computer or hard drive or thumb drive. Then reinstall windows, then reinstall all your programs. Then copy the documents you backed up onto your lap top. Then it will be like a new computer… even with all your photos on there. Seriously, how do people come up with this nonsense?

Well, if you have a lot of content on your computer I’d suggest getting an external hard drive to store things in. I have one because I have hundreds of gigs of music and anime. Also, try defragmenting your computer occasionally, it helps a little. It’s under system tools.

You might have too much stored on it.

It’s kinda like when you open up a lot on your browser, it put’s it into overload, and makes it lag.

like terrible tash said, you might have to much stored in your computer. My old laptop was beyond slow and that was thanks to my sister putting more than a thousand pictures on it. Try to clean it up a bit and delete any programs you don’t use. Also keeping your computer a bit cold can also make it run faster and if you use the battery at max potential try to switch it too normal potential so it doesn’t heat up as fast.

I also happen to know that Internet Explorer just sucked for me, thanks to my buddy Heaven she told me about this great browser called Opera and trust me it never lags. You can download it here http://www.opera.com/browser/
