Why go on living ?

I’d like to start off by stating, this is a serious question. If you don’t intend on giving a serious answer, please refrain from giving one at all…

If you wake up and have nothing to look forward to, no dreams, no wishes, no will, no hope… If your response to “You’re doing it to secure your future”, is, “what if I don’t want a future?”, Why go on living ?

Answer #1

I know EXACTLY how you feel!!!

The reason you keep on living is just becasue you dont have anything to live for doesnt mean you WONT in the future.

and people would miss you a lot if you go…you never know who REALLY cares..

i hope you do not take offense,         To that that comes hereafter;         ’Tis only that it’s my two-cents,         Not one penny more thereafter. §;o)

Welcome to Fun Advice!

in my opinion, you sound like you are usually depressed and never seem to find anything that favorably stimulates you. First, I’d suggest talking with a counselor or therapist. If you find one you can work with, they would be able to help you with your negative views on life, converting them into positive views and positive realities. Second, I’d suggest that you list some of the things about life that you DO like, and then start researching a little on the subjects. That may lead you into other interesting situations or studies that may help life have more meaning for you.

If you can’t find anyone to talk WITH, try:

  Fun Mail a “sounding board”!

I would assume that you can’t talk about what you are going through with anyone because it is too personal and you don’t want others to know about it in relation to you.

The solution, then, might be to pick someone on Fun Advice whose advice you like and Fun Mail them. (You can check out the quality of someone’s advice by clicking on their name; going down to their recent advice, click on view all, then click on the questions that might interest you and view their answers.) Explain to them that you are having problems and want to have someone to use as a “sounding board” and would like to know if they would be willing to be your sounding board. Fun Mail is basically private, so you shouldn’t have any concerns about your privacy.

Although there are many users on Fun Advice who would be qualified, I’d suggest the person be an Advisor, for two reasons: First, most Advisors have several hundred or even thousands of Answers under their belt which can really give you a perspective about them; and second, you can simply click on the Advisors link at the top of the page and view a list of the most recently active Advisors with information about them AND a total of their Answers. (Don’t contact them by that “Ask me a question” link. That’s public. Instead, click on their name which will take you to their Profile page, then click on the “Send me Fun Mail” link on the left side of the page.)

You also have the ability to Fun Mail anyone (Advisor or otherwise) by clicking on the “Send me Fun Mail” link near the top of the Answer under the person’s name.

If you are Christian, and do have the Holy Spirit living within, then, something has to be blocking the flow, because the Holy spirit is the encourager, among other things.

If you have a relationship with God, thru his word, then, you know how important you are to his kingdom?

Have you isolated yourself from other believers?

Have you quit trying to seek God, thru his spirit?

Are you alone, on your walk with God?

Do you ask for the counsel of other believers?

Do you ask for others to pray with you and for you?

Do you seek God thru the Communion ?

Do you not desire to be the light and the salt that Jesus required of us?

Do you reach out to share Jesus with others, or do you keep him to yourself?

Do you read his word or follow his disciplines?

He said if we love him, we will obey his commands.

It is not his will that you perish, but, rather that you have abundant life.

If you follow his precepts, you will find the joy that you lack.

If you need prayer, you can mail me, and I will be glad to pray for you.

i hope you do not take offense,         To that that comes hereafter;         ’Tis only that it’s my two-cents,         Not one penny more thereafter. §;o)     Again, Welcome to Fun Advice!

It comes to my mind that although you may not have seen the positive sides of life with which to become inspired, you may not have experienced, INDIVIDUALLY, the negative sides of life from which you also could become inspired. I don’t mean experienced by seeing on TV or reading in the media, but by first-hand experience - person to person.

Maybe you could take a tour through some of the wards of a hospital, or through some of the facilities that cater to those who are crippled or otherwise are suffering from the negative side of mother nature’s whims. Not only would you see how much better off you are, but you might also be inspired by how up-beat most of those patients are. How they still value their lives, no matter how difficult they have it.

Maybe you might become inspired by some of them to the point that you decide to devote part of your life and energies toward helping them and those who will follow.

Since I don’t know you, I really have no idea as to what might inspire you and get you motivated. Being religious, it might be researching more about the Bible and the history of your religion. Or, you might try Googling on any subject that enters your mind then studying some of the results.

I wish you well and hope that you will start doing the things necessary to start opening the beauty of the world up to you and give you purpose.

I find the replies rather interesting, especially the ones concerning my beliefs, as I didn’t mention anything regarding them in my question…

… the replies regarding living for the mere fact of being there for others, also quite interesting, considering, that is the way I have lived most of my life, however I no longer find fulfillment in the assistance of others and am starting to feel that my attempts in assisting others are doing nothing more than causing them more hurt…

… to those who would like to know, yes, I do believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy spirit… I am Christian and proud of it… I believe in heaven and hell and that there is a better place after this…

… however, I also believe that all creatures were placed on this earth for some reason, to affect the existence of all we come in contact with in some special way… but when one is lost, when it feels like everything one attempts seem to boomerang and have negative effects, when your best attempt at bettering yourself or assisting someone else does nothing more than to come back and bite you in the arse… then why?

This is my lame attempt to try and better myself, and even though there are many opinions out there (atheists, good luck to you) and I appreciate all who are trying to lend their perspectives of life, I still haven’t found that something to urge me to continue my “journey of enlightenment” so-to-speak…

All further views would be welcomed still…

things may suck now, but eventually things will get better. You might have a reason-so you say- but what about friends, family, loved ones, animals that may rely on you, people that look up to you. If you die how would that affect them?

Answer #7

I’m sure you know this, but it’s worth mentioning: Many Christian denominations and philosophies hold that suicide is an almost guaranteed ticket to Hell. I’ve never encountered any where suicide wasn’t at least considered a very serious sin. You should speak to a priest/pastor about it.

Answer #8

There is no meaning of life. Yet, most of us find the mere experience to be worth the cost.

Answer #9

On the contrary, a lack of belief in an afterlife is a reason to go on living, since there’s nothing waiting for you after death.

Answer #10

I can see why you may think this way if you dont belivie in an after life. but even if you think theres nothing to live for you have a chance to change the world around you. find something that intrest you (this means you actually have to try new things)

Answer #11

hey I had the same feelings once as well. but you’ll find it within you, your passion and your dreams. trust me, it will come to you. and plus, there must be someone who you’d live for? think about them and how they would feel/react if you were gone. please take care of yourself and don’t ever give up!

Answer #12

Jesus can give you a brand new start. He can make all things brand new. Why not give him a chance? Check this out… needhim (dot ) com.

God bless..

Answer #13

Life is, full of ups and downs. You never know what the next moment brings. Its best to just, take a chance, and live another day.

Answer #14

I look forward to having fun. Being with my family and friends. Doing what I love. Ballet. Rhythmic Gymnastics. Running. Swimming. Parties. Vacations.

Answer #15

When I was young I did’nt want to live I’v thought about killing myself all the time. I had no will to live. But I got away from all the things that were dragging me down. I started doing fun things and getting out. Now I’m 28 and have four kids, married. I love it. Thank god for them every day.

Answer #16

If you wake up and feel you have nothing to live for, try giving someone else something to live for. Do something helpful for someone, visit with an elderly person who has no one, or foster a dog or cat for the humane society, …help someone who may be lonely or sad. You may just find that when someone depends on you to make a difference in their lives, you will have so much more to live for.
It’s hard to know from your question if you are in a depression, clinical or situational, but there are professionals out there to help you if you give it a chance. Please don’t let the wonders of life become invisible. It may surprise you to realize how much you have to give, and by giving, you get back so much more than you can imagine.

Answer #17

I’ve had the same problem… thats why days go by so fast because I have nothing to look forward to…still dont have much… im only here because I dont want my mother to be devistated when im gone

Answer #18

and I might add, that is one of the most briefest and simplest answer I have ever given…!

what’s up anyway?

Answer #19

because you never know what is coming round the corner, there might be something, one day, when you have completely given up hope that will make you sit back and go “‘sigh it was worth the wait…”

Answer #20

no reason is what I meant but you said yourself that you believe everything has a purpose & is tied together in they way that everything affects everything so if you do die think of how that would affect people, or your reason. It might not seem like you have much of one, but what if you have secrete admires? How would that affect them. & as for your life geting better, since you are a chistian, rather then seeing this through & become stronguer you’ld burn in hell for a pitty mistake if you choose to kill yourself. You know the old saying, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. This is your chance to push through become stronger. Think of it kind of like a muscle, it tares & then becomes stronger, let this tare you so you might push through & become stronger, better

Answer #21

you sound like me a couple of years ago and you know what. after 7 suicide attemps I’m sure as hell f*cking glad I didn’t take myself out. I don’t want to talk on comments though, if you like email me. you sound very reasonable and I’d love to play the devil;s advocate for the sake of this debate. (interesting choice of words there lol) mail me, we’ll talk…

Answer #22

The problem with being in depression is it leaves you in a state where any positive future is unforseeable.

I think the only way to get out of such a depression is to change your life, in some way radically. Whether it be getting a job, going to college/university or going travelling. You can’t expect your life to improve if you do nothing about it. The main problem with depression of course is that I puts people off doing these things, but honestly (and I speak from personal experience) that change is one of the most worthwhile things you can do, and you will appreciate life again.

If you are in a job and you still feel this way then its best to just change jobs, or get re-educated. Your outlook on life will only improve if your feeling of self-worth improves.

Answer #23

Because the only opportunity you have to do anything in the first place is here and now. The only impact you can have on the world is by making it a better (or worse!) place for those who come after you. Your “why bother” argument is tantamount to “if I can’t do much, why do anything at all” - but doing a little is a whole lot better than doing nothing at all.

If you honestly believe that the only thing that you have is this life, all your actions are informed by that. Likewise if you believe that there is an afterlife and the only importance of your life here is to ensure your place in that afterlife. I for one would rather live a life informed by altruism than one informed by long-term self-interest.

Answer #24

I used to feel that way and actually made the decision to ‘pretend’ I was happy and guess what.. you actually become slightly happier than you were before. It is hard - you have to think of something good as soon as you think of a bad thing like when you are trying to get an annoying song out of your head.

I know you’re prob saying there is nothing good to think of but I dont mean just good things in your life, you can replace bad thoughs with anything positive - think about a doughnut, cute puppy, funny Seinfeld quote etc. It can be meaningless as long as it squashes that negative voice in your head. Maybe say something funny in your head with a Homer Simpson voice on.

Trust me things will gradually seem better. I am doing this at the moment and it si working.

Let me know how things go…

Answer #25

Those feelings tend not to last too long; things always end up getting better eventually. Of course part of depression is the thought that your life won’t ever get better. When I get to that point, the biggest thing keeping me from killing myself is the knowledge of what it would do to my family and friends. You might tell yourself that no one would miss you, but that’s never the case. In reality everyone you know would be plagued with grief and guilt for the rest of their lives. Your death might even lead a loved one to kill themselves. The best thing to do is to talk it out with people you care about. It’s never as bad as it seems.

In my eyes, a good life is one that leaves the world a little bit better than it would be without it. Suicide would be the worst thing you could do, by that measure.

Answer #26

Because the only alternative is nothingness. If you die, you give up any chance of ever doing anything again. If you don’t, it’s practically certain that you’ll at some point do something you consider truly worthwhile. More likely than not, you’ll do lots of those things.

Answer #27

Because today- isn’t the rest of your life. You don’t know what’s going to happen next. Something wonderful could happen. Keep on keeping on, don’t give up.

Answer #28

cause if you kill urself youll go to hell and im bein serious

Answer #29

arachnid how is that.. If I belivie that there is nothing to look foward to after death then why do anything with my short life. whats the point if after all I do I will cease to exist?
