Why don't people read Supreme Court decisions?

This question is mostly for American Christians. I’ve heard a lot of Christians refer to the Supreme Court as “godless” regarding its decisions about the role of faith in public life and public institutions. The Supreme Court, it seems, has “banned” prayer in school, has “banned” nativity scenes in public places, has “banned” the Ten Commandments from court rooms, and has overall taken a hostile disposition toward religion.

Yet, whenever I talk with Christians about this kind of stuff (often), I am alarmed at how few people have actually taken the time to read the reasons behind the SC’s decisions, and the opinions of the justices in the many cases on the establishment clause. Furthermore, I’m alarmed at how few Christians seem to be aware of how things like prayer in school even came up to the Supreme Court.

Have any of you read these decisions, like Lemon v. Kurtzman, Abbington School District v. Schempp, etc.? If so, what do you think of them? If you haven’t read them, why not?

If you think the SC has taken a hostile attitude toward religion, what makes you think that? Give examples, please.

“We know how our country was, and how it is now… and we mourn the loss…”

Really? How was it? Separation of church and state was written into the US constitution from day 1.

Answer #2

“Because it is very evident, to the believer.”

Yes, a “believer” does not need to be bothered with actuality, just belief. Belief that they are ALWAYS right, no matter what research, evidence, or any of the experts say.

Answer #3

ah kingofpop, you’re talking to a “true believer”, even if there was evidence in front of her eyes she would still say it wasnt there and wave a bible in your face… the simple answer is, they need someone to blame and so they blame the evil judicial system which is out to get them. They dont care about other’s people’s rights or the constitution, or whether any and all evidence out there contradicts them… They simply want things to go back to a magical era that never existed except in their minds…

Interesting answer, but the question still remains: what specifically has the Supreme Court done to warrant these accusations? They have not banned prayer in public school, nor have they meticulously eroded the religious freedom of Christians.

May I ask why you haven’t read any Supreme Court decisions?

America has a secular government. Most of our founding fathers noticed that religion and politics have a corrupting influence one each other. They felt that both religion and politics were best served when they were seperated from each other.

Many believers would prefer a theocracy to our secular republic. They would like God’s law to be America’s law. Ironically our secular government has allowed America to be the most Christian nation in the world. There are a higher percentage of Christians in the secular American government than there are Jews in the officially Jewish state of Isreal. England has a state religion but fewer Brits consider themselves Christian.

Our secular government has not stifled Christianity; it has proven that it allows it to thrive. The one bee in the bonnet of many Christians is that because of our secular government they are not allowed to force their views on everyone else.

Because it is very evident, to the believer. We know how our country was, and how it is now… and we mourn the loss…

I am sure the Atheists dance with glee.. however.

We, as Christians, have failed to be involved in politics, and have this now, as a legacy to our lack of involvement.

I guess we thought “God “ would take care of it, and we had no part, however, the way I see it is, that God… made a way for us to take a part… and we shirked our duty… so, now, we are reaping the consequences of that lack of action and interest on our part. We are to blame with what is going on in America.

God gave us this wonderful place, for freedom to worship the way we wanted, he also gave us the only government in the world, where we can make a huge difference, by involvement…

and what have we done, for the most part???

Kept our noses out of government…

to quote some famous and very enlightening, if not frightening words :

All it take for evil to prevail… is for good men/women to do nothing.

Those words worked when spoken, and they still work today.

They are immortal.

*We know how our country was, and how it is now… and we mourn the loss…

As a follow up, since no other Christians seem interested in this topic, “how it was” was unconstitutional. That’s my whole point. The ordnances and laws that the Supreme Court struck down in cases like Abbington School District V. Schempp, Engel v. Vitale, etc. were violations of the Establishment Clause. The Supreme Court never banned prayer in schools. It ruled against laws that mandated prayer for all students, or mandated a moment of silence that was motivated by denominational purposes.

I think the post by filletofspam is right about Christian preference for a theocracy. But Christians should keep in mind what “establishment of religion” means, and also realize that a theocracy will end up violating the other part of the First Amendment, that being “prohibiting the free exercise thereof”.
