Why does milk upset my stomach in the morning?

So this is really strange and it’s been happening to me for years and I’m just wondering if anyone knows why. When I drink any kind of milk in the morning after I wake up I get a stomach ache, or sometimes nausea, I’ve even thrown up from drinking milk in the morning, it’s very strange. I’m not lactose intolerant because after a couple hours of being awake I can drink milk and be perfectly fine. Or if I eat like cereal and milk for breakfast for some reason that doesn’t seem to effect me much. It’s just when I drink it shortly after waking up. It seems so odd, I’ve avoided it for a long time but this morning after waking up I drank some chocolate milk thinking maybe my body had gotten passed it but nope same crap happened as usual. Anyways was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knows anything about what could be the problem. Also, I love milk so if there’s anyway to solve this problem advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don’t know why milk is so hard on your stomach in the early morning, and not at other times.

Possibly because when you first wake up all body processes have been slowed, including digestion.

I do know that many people as they get older are less tolerant to milk, though.

Humans are the only animals who continue to drink milk after babyhood…so that too, might account for why it’s harder to digest as we grow older.

Same problem here. All through school, I’d have milk and cereal for breakfast and in about a half hour I’d have the worst stomach ache. Growing older hasn’t helped except once in a great while, it actually won’t happen ! I have always been able to drink milk any other time of day without much problem. I’m trying lactose-free milk now for breakfast with my cereal and so far so good. (It’s only been 4 days so I’ll let you know.) I read that most lactose intolerant people can drink or eat some dairy without problems depending on how much enzyme they make to help digest it. I like milk so I’ll keep trying.

Hey I just wanted you to know that this happens to me to. I can have milk and cereal in the morning but never just a glass of milk or my stomach will be upset and I feel like crap for about half an hour to an hour. But if it’s not the morning then I can drink milk as much as I want. This also happens to me when the first thing I eat in the morning is sweet or not something I usually eat in the morning.
