Why do people have so many rumors about Mormons?

I think it’s kinda interesting that other religions pick on the mormons. Most churches take heat when they first start out, but the heat with the mormons never ends. There are so many rumors and random beliefs about the LDS church that aren’t true like:

-multiple wives -no birth control -no dancing -multiple Gods -no use of electricity and modern technology -everyone being really strict and uptight -etc.

None of that’s true, where does it all come from? why do people try so hard to bash on the LDS church..?

I think the main issue is one of timing. The mormon religion is the most recent derivative of the Torah, or the book the Christians call the “old testament”.

Islam used the same book in the 7th century to get their religion going.

Christians used it in the middle ages to split from the Catholic church.

But, since the Mormons are the latest to the party ( a few hundred years ago )…well, it’s kind of like Santa Claus. Sure, when you’re a kid (or lack technology) it’s easy to believe in it. Then later, when you grow up…welll, those golden tablets. Aweful convenient for such rock solid proof to disappear.

However, I applaud the Mormon church for trying to explain how Jesus came & preached to the people in the Americas, long before the Christians showed up to pillage & conquer. Still odd though, how there weren’t any native mormons here when the religion got started and it was still somebody of European decent.

I love history, and find it fascinating. With any religion, though, you can’t just read history, you have to believe, and that takes faith. I think it’s easier for people to believe in older events as truth, in general, than newer ones, because you have more history around newer events that can alter your perception.

I worked with Mormons at my last job including my boss. All the Mormons I knew were consciencious and hard working. Mormonism holds no negative connotations for me.

I know the LDS church changed its position on plural marriage long ago and that it now it even allows blacks to into the presthood.

As far as the extra strict and uptight thing goes; the Mormons I knew didn’t drink caffeinated or alcoholic beverage. The women I met wore long sleved blouses and ankle length skirts even on the hottest Texas Summer days. As I see it they are uptight and strict but that’s no skin off my nose.

To me the strangest part of the religion is the temple garments.

The people who think that Mormons don’t use electricity probably have Mormons confused with Amish.

It just like scientology or the masons.

There is just not enough public information, so people supplant it with rumors, until someone sets them straight :-)

Answer #4

I think it’s because the book of the mormons is so strange and farfetched (my opinion). My mormon friend has tried to explain it to me many times and it still seems strange and at times ludicrous. I don’t hate mormons or try to bash them and I see where your coming from (most people in my school believe you worship a bear), but it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Answer #5

please we in the last days becareful and read your bible well, do the will of GOD

Answer #6

that makes sense. what do you mean that there’s not enough public info though?
