Why are so many christians so dead set against buddhism?

im just curious. because buddhism isnt technically a religion, its a philosophy. So why do christians hate it so much?

Answer #1

they want to convert everyone to christianity, and if they dont convert, they hate them. like christians been hating muslims for hundreds of years, now they making them look bad. america is in the middle east, not to stop terrorism, they just want oil. greed is an evil thing

Answer #2

Only those who are “religious” would be against it. What I meant is the typical religious attitude that somethings either one way or the other and anything other than that is false. It isn’t just Christians tho, it could be anyone.

I’m a Christian and I am strong and rooted in my faith, but I believe God wants us to be open-minded to ideas and excepting toward everyone.

Personally, I think Buddhism and Christianity share similar values with slight differences and diversity is something to celebrate.:)

Answer #3

if you ‘hate’ Buddhists, then lets face it, your not Christian. love your neighbour right? Christian and Buddhist beliefs are different but the moral to the story is all the same… everyone needs to wake up and realise that we’re all the same and want the same things

Answer #4

I dont know any Christian person who hates Buddhism. I have some friends who are Catholic nuns working in Myanmar with Buddhist monks and they all get on really well. They both find they can learn a lot from each others beliefs. The only kind of Christian person who hates Buddhism would be the kind of person who hates every other belief aside from their own which is a bit riddiculous.

Answer #5

thats a good question, I am both Christian and Buddhist. I dont believe in the buddha, and that he was a god, that that he was an AMAZING philosopher. some Christians get too crazy about it. my boyfriend got in my face one day when I said I was both buddhist adn christian he told me that I culdnt be both, but thats only because he comes from a very christian family. I got pretty mad about it, but I know what I am and what im not. thats all that matters. christians tend to think that God is the only religion to live by, buut there are tons of others. I think they should really think it all out.. but dont worry about em.

Answer #6

hmmm? I think I am a closet buddhist. :)

Probably only fanatics really hate buddhism.

Answer #7

I suppose, if one wants to believe in a giant hopping bunny who hands out eggs at easter, and a big, fat guy who lives at the north pole and flies around the world in a night on reindeer, then good for them, whatever rocks their boat :)

ah ignorance is entertaining!

Answer #8

Sprtyhrsegrl1, how many Christians do you actually know who DO ACTUALLY detest Buddhism…I’m not talking about your educated guess or the numbers you pulled out of your hat? ..But actual people you surveyed and converse with??.

I’m a Christian and have no issues with Buddhism…Mind you; my knowledge on other religions other then Christianity is very limited to say the least… I suppose, if one wishes to worship a bald, jolly looking chubby man and thinks rubbing his tummy brings good luck, then good for them, whatever rocks their boat. :)

Answer #9

Agreed with toad And if you think they discriminated against Buddha Boy you should see them against Wiccans, Pagans, and Witches man I had them threatening to burn my @ss at the stake just because the pentagram I wear about my neck. But again, it’s not all Christians.

Answer #10

Because they dont’ have a god. They have a real guy. (not to be rude to Christians, you blieve what you want(: ) But they dont’ believe in a Heaven or a Hell. They want to reach enlightenment, To reach they’re own eternal happiness. They medetate to get there. The have patience. When Christians Belive in higher power, and not equalism as a whole. They have the bible forced down their throats since they’re kids. They’re fed false and true information. They’re taught to role call other people into that religion. it’s a scary thing. Nobody should ever have to go through the brainwashing they do. Wow… that was more of a rant on christianity than anything… I’m sorry.

I hope the beginning stuff helpped a little though(:

Were you aware that the Dalai Lama and the Pope had a great friendship?

If people can’t follow the example of their leaders, you end up with questions just like this one.

Answer #13

I did say so many not all…and by so many I mean almost all that I have met…and trust me I know A LOT of them

Answer #14

You’re generalizing a little arent you? I havent met a christian who hated buddhism (I mean apart from those who hate anything different from their beliefs, and they’re a unique bunch who dont discriminate, they hate all things equally…)

Answer #15

because they are christian and they want to be right at everything

Answer #16

…because it isn’t Christianity.

Answer #17

Some research comparing doctrines of both religions. They are close. Both believed in haven and hell. God in Christianity equals to Dharma in Buddhism.

Answer #18

But as the Pope was leaving he said: “Jesus could so whip Buudha at Jeopardy!!”

Answer #19

I think there are Christians who judge other religions and say things like “If you dont believe in Christ you wont go to Heaven”, that is not hating, but it is still probably not what a so-called Christian should be focussing their energy on. A Person who followed the principles laid down By Jesus would probably try to figure out how to help his fellow man, and to live in God’s will. Just saying. :)

(I feel like a dork. I signed up specifically for this post, but here goes).

First off Hello my name is Sarai, I am Christian and I mean no disrespect when responding to any of your posts.

ahhhhhhhx3 >

  1. “I am both Christian and Buddhist… I know what I am and what im not” -Apparently not. If someone takes elements of one religion and mixes its beliefs with those of another; the person has in effect created a new religion. It’s either you’re Christian/Buddhist. You’re going to need to make a choice at some point. You can’t be both. No man can serve two masters (especially not ones as diverse as Christian and Buddhism). If you want to be Buddhist and something else you can be a Buddhist-Taoist because they’re compatible. Taoism is so general it can blend into other religions. Buddhism and Taoism blended so well that they formed their own belief system called Ch’an (Zen).

  2. “christians tend to think that God is the only religion to live by, buut there are tons of others.” -In every religion you’ll find those who believe their religion is the correct one, not just Christianity.

saved> “I think buddism and christianity share similar values with slight differences” -The two differ in their concept of God. There is no God in Buddhism and there is a god in Christianity. The two differ in their concept of God. For Buddhists in general, the Absolute does not play a vital role in daily living. Gautama said little about his concept of God. Buddha denied the existence of a personal God but was monistic in his view of the Absolute as an impersonal force made up of all living things. The Bible teaches of a God who rules the universe, and cares for man in a personal way. Psalm 46:10 states, “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted among the earth.” It is clear that Buddha never claimed to be deity. Although several sects have elevated him to athe status of a god, he clearly claimed to be only the way-shower to Nirvana. Jesus, however, claimed to be God and not simply a way-shower but instead the only way to eternal life. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 1:1 also states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Buddhism offers neither assurance of forgiveness or eternal life. (Buddhists hope to enter into the state of Nirvana, but there is no clear, objective proof or teaching on what occurs beyond the grave).

freefromself > “I think there are Christians who judge other religions and say things like If you dont believe in Christ you wont go to Heaven” -Some people are like not just Christians and not all Christians. A true Christian knows the Lord does not see religion he sees the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

xxbubonic_plaguexx> “They have the bible forced down their throats since they’re kids. They’re fed false and true information. They’re taught to role call other people into that religion. it’s a scary thing. Nobody should ever have to go through the brainwashing they do.” -Nara, that’s not true bibles aren’t forced down anyone’s throat. To accept Christ is a CHOICE a personal one. Many are what they’re parents are for they we’re the ones who planted the seed, but that’s based on religion not character. I chose Christ and I did a lot of research and reading etc. No one’s taught to role call other people into Christianity. It’s not even about religion it’s about your relationship with God. Brainwashing is what the government does. But I’m not even getting into that.

It took a long time to for me to move from a place where I could understand the difference between what is Gods will and what is mans way of controlling through religion. I choose Christ because after reading about most of the worlds religions, the Christ message seems to have all the truths i was looking for. Not to mention “The Passion”. In the end I did choose a God of Absolute Love. If the average person really understood what jesus did on the cross, there would be only Christians left in this world.
