Why are negative signed numbers required in math?

I need the question answered for my math homework. I dont need any examples just maybe the answer to the question

Answer #1

When you get to physics and upper leavel math you need them and use them a lot. In physics especially. It dictates direction.

Answer #2

You need negative number to take things away. Imagine if you are in debt for $100, if there are no negative numbers, all you could ever do is add to your debt or leave it at $100.

You also need negative numbers to express a value below 0. You live in Alabama, occasionally, the temperature dips below 0 fahrenheit. You could express the temp as -1f, or -18.333c, or to use a positive number, 254.8166667k.

Lastly, imagine simply trying to subtract 6 from 5. Only using negative numbers could you express the answer. Even the equation itself ‘5 -6 = ‘ uses a negative number. (Remember the number line problems?)
