Who can read Hebrew?

I was just wondering if there’s anyone that can read Hebrew? If so, could you please translate this for me:

טבעונית

I already know what it means but I want to triple check just to make sure as it is something I would like to get tattooed.

This is what an Israeli friend of mine answered (and she’s a professor of modern languages in Tel Aviv, so she should know)

‘The word means “vegetarian” or “naturalist”. It is an feminine adjective (in Hebrew every adjective may be masculine, feminine, plural-masculine or plural-feminine) and it is pronounced: tiv’onit. So you can say: Susila tivonit :”Susila is a vegetarian”, or dieta tivonit: “a vegetarian diet” (diet being a feminine noun).

Now, usually this word would refer to a woman who not only doesn’t eat meat (this would be “tsimhonit” (vegetarian in the sense one who doesn’t eat meat)), but rather to one who has other dietary restrictions such as not mixing protein with carbohydrates, etc’

Note her second paragraph - maybe what you want is ‘tsimhonit’?

Thank you so much susila2. That’s pretty much the meaning I was looking for. Well, I’m a vegan, not a vegetarian, but I don’t think there is a word for only vegan. For instance in Hindi, I think they use the same word for both.

But you said that this word usually refers to one who has OTHER dietary restrictions, so I guess this word applies here, right?

So glad to help! Yes, if you’re a vegan that should be the word, as far as I can judge.

And, even though Cyprus (where I am) is only just across the waters from Israel, I hadn’t been in touch with my friend for a while - so it was a good excuse. By the way, she also wrote that when my email came in, she was in the process of putting (definitely non-vegetarian) chicken into the oven. Bye for now, S
