I agree with amblessed, I don’t think they pay for them to do that.

I’m not sure if they do, but I think each person is screened before being allowed to meet with the 3 judges. Perhaps when there’re not enough talented people coming forward in that state, the weirdos that are picked can then perform in order to make up time to complete that hour of the show. There are times where I changed the channel to watch something else because of being annoyed at seeing and hearing the non-talented performers. I don’t think that changing channels is financially beneficial to the show so maybe soon the non-talented ones will be replaced by something worth watching.
