When docters take bone marrow, do they put you under?

I was watching House MD, and this kid was going to donate bone marrow to his older brother. When they did it, they didn’t even put him under! They strapped him to a table and said,”This is gonna hurt.” Does that really happen?

Depending on the age. When I have bone marrow taken which is quite often they usually give me local anesthetic so I’m relaxed but not totally under. House portayed an unusual… way of doing that. It’s a dama, so I guess it’s expected.

To answer your question, not always. If it’s a major transfusion than yes they will put you under. When I had to have my bone marrow transplant done, they put my donor out because they took a lot of bone marrow and it does get quite painful.

But for regular BMA’s, I don’t usually get put under.

Hope this helped!
