What the difference btween "hi" and "hey"?

When somebody says “hi” to you.. Like in a chat room, does it mean the same thing as “hey” … Whats the difference?

Answer #1

Hi is more formal and conservative and Hey is more laid back and relax..=)

Answer #2

They’re both a formal expression of greeting so I don’t see the difference. All I can really say is that someone probably prefers ‘’hi’’ instead of ‘’hey’’. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, both words serve the same purpose :).

Answer #3

its spelled different LOL. no difference really.

Answer #4

I say hey when I’m talking to people who are close to me. And I’ll say hi to people I’ve just met. I guess hi is just more formal…
