What should your credit be to rent an apartment?

I need to move out and get my own place, but I’ve made some credit mistakes when I was younger. I want to rent an apartment, but most places require credit checks for approval. What should my credit score be to be considered “good” enough to rent?

These days most apartments do run credit checks on potential renters. Apartment managers assume that someone who has poor credit also might not pay their rent on time or might trash the apartment.

Obviously almost everyone eventually finds someplace to live. Talk to some landlords, perhaps if they like you they will decide you are a good guy inspite of having some earlier problems. Some apartments that rent to people with financial problems require you to pay your first and last month’s rent in addition to the deposit. That way they know that they know you won’t be able to stiff them on the last month’s rent.
