What should I do? ): Help!?

Okay, So I have my ex and like were practiclly together but not officially, and like my parents DONT like him, hes made some mistakes in the past, but so have I. . we have been on and off for nine months, Yes I do love him, he was my first true love. I know he is seriouis about us this time, we have been doing great but recently we started getting akward with us,I feel like I need some space but I dont want to risk losing him, because I really do like him, today I told him we need time, but now im regreting it my friend says its because I dont know how to be without him, which I think is true.

I met this other guy that I really really like he helped me get over my ex, And we were talking I knew he liked another girl but I let it go because I still kinda liked my ex, But then he told me that we should just be friends! because he likes the other girl more, But he said for me to wait for him?! I do really like him but is it wrong for me to wait for him? I havnt dated a guy in 9 months other then my ex, My friends says I should wait for awhile but im getting impatient because I am used to guys waiting for ME and this time its different, I know this guy does really like me and I believe it, I just want all this to work out.

Did I do the right thing??? Please help me! Im hopelessly devoted! ):
