What's the difference between religion itself? and Scientology?

Hi, I’m curious to find out from all of you what’s the difference between religion itself? and Scientology? Are they the same topic? Or, are they different? positive feedback would be great.

Answer #1

Well, from my understanding Scientology is a cult. That doesn’t mean that people do-n;’t considerate a religion.

Answer #2

What’s the difference between religion and scientology? Scientology is a religion. It’s like asking what’s the difference between animal and cat. A cat is an animal. You cant compare the two of them.

Answer #3

The difference between a religion and a cult is in the eye of the beholder. When things age they suddenly stop being cults and gain credibility (for some ridiculous reason) and so they are suddenly religions. It is considered to be a religion.

Answer #4

*As I see it, a myth is a religion older than your own and a cult is a religion newer than your own. To many Christians: Mormons, Scientology and Baha’I are all cults. The stories of the Sumerian, Egyptian, Norse, and classical gods are myths.

perfect answer.

Answer #5

I’ld have to say agreed with all the above the only thing I’ve left to say is, hey Chritianity is considered a cult, doesn’tmean it isn’t still a religion

Answer #6

addis1 I agree with ty, age does not give a belief system credibility over another. Honestly, say that the majority of people were brought up to be scientologists. And then this group of people came up and said “we are a new religion, we believe that there is a god up in the heavens and you must be good or he will damn you to a hot place in the center of the earth and have to endure an entity named the devil for eternity. And a long time ago a virgin somehow gave birth to a child.etc” then wouldnt Christianity or other older religions seem like a weird cult??? We’d be like “who are these people…? Why do they actually think that there was a woman who gave birth to a child as a virgin? how weird…and they all try to gain followers…must be a cult…!” the feelings towards scientology is more based on the discomfort people feel towards something different than actually thinking its a cult.

as for the question the cat/animal analogy was PERFECT! Scientology is a religion. Its a belief system. It cant really be compared :)

As I see it, a myth is a religion older than your own and a cult is a religion newer than your own. To many Christians: Mormons, Scientology and Baha’I are all cults. The stories of the Sumerian, Egyptian, Norse, and classical gods are myths.

Most people can plainly see the absurdity of every religion except their own.

The term cult originally meant a small offshoot religion, a religion based on a central idea or figure, or a set of practices or rituals. It has became more and more pejorative over time; especially after the anti-cult movements of the 1970s. The theory in the anti-cult movement is that cults unlike religions employ brainwashing and coercive techniques to enforce obedience. Apparently telling children that they will be tortured for eternity if they don’t believe something isn’t coercive at all while asking members to chant for hours on end is.
