What's the difference between Dolby Surround & 5.1 Dolby Surround?

Whenever I watch a certain DVD, before it starts, it asks me if I want to watch it in Dolby Surround or 5.1 Dolby Surround. I’ve watched it in both versions, and I can’t tell the difference between the sound. Is there a difference? Thanks

the numbers refer to the number of speakers. 3.1 means a front and 2 sides, and the .1 means a subwoofer. 5.1 means a front, 2 sides, 2 rears, and a sub. and so on with 7.1. generic surround sound will work on 3, 3.1, 5.1, or 7.1. the others are tailored for x number of speakers.
