What kind of bird is this?

We have a bird here that just appeared tonight and doesn’t seem to be very scared of my husband, myself or my children. I’m wondering if anyone knows what kind of bird it is.

Answer #1

Pigeon…a fancy one…

Answer #2

I see these super feathery pigeons all the time in the city here :P

Answer #3

The common name is a “fan tailed Pigeon”. My dad used to keep some of them back in the old country :-)

Here are some cool pictures: http://www.pueblozoo.org/archives/jun03/feature.htm

They’re beautiful birds, expensive, and quite rare, your bird probably escaped from someone’s coop, which is why its so tame.

Feed him some bird seed, corn or even some broken up pieces of bread. Pigeons can have germs, that they pick up from feeding on refuse or garbage. They do not innately have germs. This one may not however, since he seems to be an escapee.

We thought it was a pigeon also but my husband says that pigeons don’t have feathers on their legs.

it looked like a really weird pidgon.  O_o

Answer #9

After I sent my answer I noticed the feathers, hmmm.

I just found this: “Pigeons come in every imaginable color and variety, from gray barred (like urban pigeons) to red to silver, from petite to huge (The “Giant Runt” can weigh over 2-1/2 pounds), from frilly feathered to feathered feet.”

Answer #10

Hehe yeah a ‘fancy’ pigeon. Just give the little fella a top hat, a monocle, and a little stick-on bow tie and it should complete the look too. I’m serious, I could totally see the pigeon pulling that look off!

Answer #11

I would have to agree with the pigeon id. but it also kind of looks like a ptarmigan with that long leg plumage. look at a picture of a ptarmigan . it appears that ptarmigans have a more hooked beak- hard to see the beak from your photo. but it very well could be somebodies exotic pet pigeon.

Answer #12

Answer #14
