What kind of beetle is this?

I was shopping with my sister and when we were waiting for a cab I noticed something really big on the other wall outside, we checked it out and it appeard to be a beetle about 3 inches in length and an inch wide. It was brown, it had a dark big X on it’s back and it had 4 legs and 2 really big clippers that looked pointy on the tips and serraded going down (kinda like a walnut cracker) I live in canada (Toronto) some lady walked by and she said in canada? and my sister said, are they soppose to be in canada? and the lady shook her head no and walked away…It attracted a lot of attention and some guy touched it’s back and said it felt like bark. Are they dangerouse and what kind of beetle is it? Thanks.

Does it look like this, by any chance?

Lethocerus americanus is actually found in Manitoba, so it does belong in Canada.

It does bite, and it’s been known to kill fish and small reptiles, so don’t pick it up.
