What is the difference between esposo and marido?

My man and I have taken the next step! He is of Puerto Rican descent, and he speaks almost perfect spanish. He calls me esposa when he is playing around, and asked me to call him my husband in spanish. So I looked it up and there are two words for husband. So confusing! Which do I use? What is the difference? I asked him that, and he just told me to use the one I’m comfortable with saying; he says they mean what they mean and that is it, nothing else. Is one more professional or serious than the other? Can anyone help me?

I may be wrong here, but this is my understanding. Esposa means female spouse and esposo means male spouse, or husband, cause it’s the same thing. Marido is just the actual word for husband.
