some kid said that a lake is just really warm snow, and I called him an idiot, but now I’m just wondering if it’s actually true…?

Mountain lakes, unless they are completely artificial, start their lives as snow on hills and mountains, so technically, he was correct.

There may be lakes formed from rain runoff, too, of course.
