What..Is it REALLY true that dogs CANNOT see colors?

Is it true that dogs CANNOT see colors? I’ve heard people say that dogs CAN’T see in color, And that they can only see black and white? Is this really true?

Answer #1

Hi,

The human eye is made of 4 different color receptors. Those that differ dark/bright, and those for 3 different frequencies of visible light.

Most animals have color receptors that are different from those in the human eye. Dogs have less different sorts of receptors than humans, but they have more than one sort. So you can be sure they percieve color somehow.

But we won’t know what exactly animals see until we have a way to read minds.

It’s not true that they can only see in black and white. Their vision is like a color-blind person’s; they can see more shades that just black and white, but their ability to distinguish different shades is limited.

But it;s not just dogs. Other than primates and cetaceans (whales and dolphins), most mammals have limited color vision.
