What is it inside us that connects everyone? Are we forgetting?

I was sitting idle, listening to Deadmau5's Faxing Berlin, and I suddenly started thinking about this. Are we not all connected, as humans? Obviously there are many barriers between the individual and the population in this society. Everyone has their own life, their own rights, their independence. If they don't have these things they fight those who deny them. I wonder if we are forgetting the connection, the bond that all members of a species share as a group. Is this what causes social alienation, violent crime, vagrancy, and stark independence? Is it over-population causing this human network to be diluted so we can't feel it? Are we so wrapped up in our disagreements of rights and politics, defending our own stances that we have left behind our collective subconscious?
