A nerd is someone who likes to study and, therefore, kind of lacks the adequate social skills. A nerd usually cares more about reading than socializing or looking human. This image has already been established by the time he realizes there’s more to life than books that he/she/it usually has a hard time making friends.

On the upside, a nerd usually has to suffer only through high school. People who bother to go to college tend to be more open-minded and accepting of studious people.

It is a stereotype but one that may people seem to match. I know that as a lad I was unpopular, bad at most sports, had poor social skills but I was also bookish and designed my own ham radio transmitters before having any formal training in electronics and I had a bad habit of taking things apart just to see how they worked.

It has been noted that engineers tend to have Asperger’s syndrome which is a mild form of autism that causes them to be socially awkward. It is possible that the nerdiness is more than a stereotype and a descriptoin of a specific type of person who has good analytical skills but poor people skills.
