What IM systems let you use a hotmail account?

I give up with MSN because it keeps getting all these errors and its driving me craaazy! Is Yahoo Mail any better? worse? and do you need a Yahoo email to use it?

Yahoo IM you can use with Yahoo email, or you can use trillium, or adium or similar clients that allow you to interact with people irregardless of what their email address is.

I use adium for mac, which is awesome. Free, too :)
